I walk into the Telecom Store in the Wellington Queensgate mall.

I go up to the person at the counter,
I ask "Do you have a pamphlet?"

"A what?" he replies
"You know, like, a brochure?" I say.
(Sales. Rep has confused face)
"Like.. (hmm)... pieces of paper with phones on it?"
By which I am greeted "OHH!!! Right! We ran out of them, we've only got these photocopies."

He hands me a wonky, black and white photocopy of the two phone pages of the "Discover" brochure.

Sheesh, was it really that hard to find me a page with the phones on them??
Really??

They are terrible.

Dunedin sales rep lied and said NBNZ banking would work on this Samsung phone he was thinking about buying.

It didn't.

He had to return many times until he finally got a refund. Very poor, rude and uneducated staff. He had to pretty much quote the CGA for the Manager.

I should also mention I had been to the Vodafone store seconds prior to visiting the Telecom store and they were so much more helpful. Not bashing Telecom or anything, I use XT on my main phone, but honestly their service is not very good.

Cannot say im surprised.

If someone came up to me, if I still worked at DSE, and asked 'do you have a pamphlet' I would have happily given them one on resistors and capacitors. Knowing full well what they wanted was a $20 top-up for their cellphone.

Sorry, but what do you expect when you only give half your question, they cannot read your mind.

I personally wouldn't have known what you really wanted if you simply asked me "Do you have a pamphlet?"

Unless you asked for a pamphlet with the latest phones or broadband deals etc.

"Pamphlet: A small booklet of printed informational matter, often unbound, having only a paper cover."

 * advertisement
 * booklet
 * brochure
 * catalogue, catalog
 * circular
 * flier, flyer
 * handbill
 * junk mail
 * leaflet

Seriously, I don't think you would have to be a genius to work that one out.
Also, The guy looked half asleep when he was talking to me.

I know what a pamphlet is but you have to specify exactly what pamphlet you wanted.

There is no context in your question. That's my point.

It's like walking into a Supercheap Auto and asking, "Can I have a pamphlet?" On what though?

Yes, but Telecom do more than sell cellphones.

A genius? no, but a mind reader yes.

@codyc1515 The thing is, you have to be specific of what sort of pamphlet you're asking for, there are lots of pamphlet for the phones they have, like quick phone product brochure, or Telecom's own brochure which could be services, plans, phones etc etc etc...

So simply asking for "pamphlet" is asking, can I have a book... book of what?!? You know?

I can see both sides, you get as good as you give, ie being a bit more exact to a sales person gets more informative responses. Suely you were after more that a brochure, you obviously wanted details on phones plans and prices, would a better question would have been, Do you have any information on phones and pricing.

On the other hand a good sales person should have asked a few more questions before handing out anything, Like "exactly what type of brochure are you looking for"

It does of course depend on the store. Telecom here in Whakatane is good, whereas Vodafone is appalling.

Does anyone know what the going rate for a Telecom store worker is by any chance?

80 k a year,

No seriously though, you can't judge an entire brand based on your poor experience with one staff member.
