Hi I was just noticed a post about slow ADSL2+ downstream and upstream and I was wondering if you guys could help me.

Im on telecom Total Home Pro so my connection should be fast but im only managing 4.78mb/s down and 0.51 mb/s up

https://www.speedtest.net/result/1040158164.png

Im on TG585v7 if it helps

and I've also attached some cabinet details

You''ll need to find in the advanced information page your line statistics/rates to give an indication.

Including your current SYNC protocols.

And on the wholesale maps, are you within the pink area (cabinet) or orange (exchange cover)

I would suggest you have some serious house wiring issues, could be on the Telecom side of the network, but I would guess its your house wiring.

Have you tried an isolation test, ie disconnect everything from the line except the modem, this includes phones, fax's sky boxs and whatever you have. Do you have a monitored alarm (actually monitored or not). Maybe you could tell us about what phone sockets and stuff you have.

How would i do an isolation test?

Umm, we have 4 phone sockets with 2 used, both have filters. 1 is attached to a fax machine the other is attached to a phone
-We don't have sky
-We have an unmonitored alarm
-3 Computers attached to the internet

However i do manage to stream 720p from youtube with no lag and manage to download at microsoft and 900+ kbps..

Thanks

Those figures are pretty awful to be honest. Time to do the usual track down as suggested.

If its the telecom supplied thompson there doesn't seem to be a firmware update to possibly fix issues either.

For comparison..
I have a very small gap between noise/signal and reasonable line attenuation so goodish speeds.

Statistics      Downstream      Upstream
Line Rate     16489 Kbps     945 Kbps
Attainable Line Rate     16180 Kbps     945 Kbps
Noise Margin     4.5 dB     13.5 dB
Line Attenuation     19.5 dB     8.9 dB
Output Power     16.8 dBm     12.4 dBm

Microsoft = akamai distributed server.. often .NZ so fast.
Youtube on xtra = cached so fast

Hi, as said above, disconnect everything including the filters, however this is a basic isolation test, if you have a alarm that has the phone circuit go through it then you will need to disconnect that.

To do a real test you need to get a clean line at the demarc with all house wiring disconnected.

The two download scenarios you mention would not stress a 5Mb/s connection, however based on you line attenuation and location you should be getting 3x the current download speed.

So I'll disconnect everything except the adsl router and try download/upload speed at speedtest.net?

Sorry im not good with computers

Thanks!

Yes, although its more useful check on the modem status page dont worry about speedtests, in partiular bandwidth (or speed) attenuation and SN margin.

I should point out that to disconnect everything is a basic isolation test, it may not help, if the wiring is in real bad state then only a full isolation test will show what can be achieved

Hi, there seriously is something wrong with your connection, those numbers are all wrong and the most common cause is house wiring. It could be the DSLAM port or street wiring, but before you go down that route you need to clear you house wiring, ideally by having a central filter installed.

Thanks for helping me :)
How would I install one and how do i check if its my house wiring?

By central filter do you mean that little filter than you plug the phone/modem into that plugs into the wall? If its one of those I have 1 already

Hi a central filter is installed within the wiring of the house, this normally requires a technician to do this, Telecom charge around $200 to do this, a security company or data/phone cabling company may do it for less, some sparkies that are Data/Phone savey can install it for you.

If you are suitably practical and of a DIY inclination then you can do it yourself I am happy to give instructions

Cheers
