Hi all,

I was browsing through the Special Offers part of the Telecom website when I came across this http://store.telecom.co.nz/mobile/special-offers/iphone-to-xt:

"If you’ve got an iPhone, and you’re not already on XT, head into a Telecom Retail store now with a free SIM Voucher code and we’ll sort you out with a free Prepaid SIM card to test it for yourself. Then, once you’ve seen how fast XT is on your iPhone, we’ll give you a $600 credit when you sign up to any 24 month One Rate 180 (or higher) plan.

To receive your free SIM voucher code, text “SIM” to 466. By texting us you agree to receive promotional communications from Telecom. Texts cost 20c.

Offer ends 31 January or while stocks last."

Seems like a good deal to entice customers, what do you think?

It is an $81/month plan with no data on it... I'd shop around if I were you as your $600 credit is less than 6 months free - if you were really light on your data use. Then you need to pay your $81/month plus extra for data for the next 18 month. Check out Vodafone and in particular 2degrees, cos if you've already got and paid for an iPhone then there is simply no need to be locked into an expensive plan for 24 years. Think about it - it just does not make sense!

I read the terms, and got the impression that you get to try out the XT network with the free microSIM, and then see if you want to signup onto the plan (I get the feeling that the plan bit is optional).

The trying out is a good thing, but if you have an iPhone already I wouldn't sign onto the plan - just go something that doesn't lock you in.

I think people report the XT speeds as being better than the others.

the plan with the credit is not great for iPhone users, but I guess if they are going to offer that much credit they need to put you on an expensive plan to make it work out.

Still, good idea to get people to try out XT for no risk.
If I had designed that offer I'd probably go for the onerate50 for $30 which is doubled to 100 mins and whack on a 500MB (currently doubled to 1GB) smartphone extra for $38 which also gets you 2500 txts (doubled to 5000).

so $68 per month for 100 anytime & anynet mins, 5000 anynet txts, and 1GB of nationwide data.  pretty good IMO.

nearly same price as Onerate 180 ($80), so probably should be able to offer close to the $600 credit too.

The link in the original post, http://store.telecom.co.nz/mobile/special-offers/iphone-to-xt

was obviously tested prior to Vodafones 3G network improves as of late, I conducted exactly the same test now against the youtube video, downloading the same Plasma Globe APP, and completed around 2 seconds slower than Telecom, and thats peak afternoon when the network traffic would be at its highest.

Hows it crap?
You'd only need one if you were on Vodafone or 2degrees, and if you were already on telecom you wouldn't need one.

Because I would move my IDEOS off 2degrees and onto XT, but my current phone is an R6, so I can't present the voucher. $0.20 + Micro-sim to Sim adapter = A damn sight cheaper then the $30 for a sim. Then I could use mobile data on my IDEOS when I'm in town, rather than hunting for wifi - I'm not in a Mobile Broadband Zone and I can get a better deal on data with XT.

There is $10 credit pre-loaded, and I assume you can fill out the survey and get another $10 credit.

One BIG problem here, your IDEOS won't work on XT.

I'm well aware of the frequency differences, but there is sufficient 2100mhz coverage in Dunedin, as I have to friends who live out of the central city and still get good XT reception on their IDEOS'. I don't txt on my IDEOS but use it for Facebook etc and basic internet browsing. That's why I would switch to XT, because I can use the 500mb plan when in the city. 2degrees data is too expensive.

Here I was just thinking it was a nasty unfair stereotype that everyone in Dunedin was incredibly cheap ;)
