Hi just recently my internet speed has been slower than normal (still have heaps of usage left). A test on speedtest.net yeilds a result of no more than 1.8mbps  (Normal is 4.5 - 5.0mbps) on the Palmerston North server no matter what time of the day i test it. Ive done a couple of international tests:

Sydney, Australia 1.2mbps max
Los Angeles, California 2.8mbps max

Ive reset my modem and it makes no difference, also tested using another PC and still the same result.

Is this happening to anyone else?

U find depending if it rains our phone lines get noisy... and the speed drops from 8000 down to 1000 or 5000 like hat.. when it dries out or stops raining for a while I power of router.modem and often it gets the line speed back up.. got worse since the chch quakes.. must be a crack letting in water somewhere between here and exchange.. im more out country.. well 20min from main city goes to show what poor cabling we have from telecom in this country.. my friend up the road the asdl isnt even in the road and mobilenet is so slow and flaky for her.. and more expensive and less data etc.

Why so quick to blame Telecom? While it is possible that something like this affects some people, most of the problems are related to internal wiring - what if your own wiring at home gets wet during rain? Have you checked?

In any way, back to the topic,  mikelday have you added anything to your wiring? A new phone handset, new fax, wired alarm? Have you checked the filters are in the right place? Checked that the DSL modem *is not* plugged into a filter?

Have you done a test by unplugging all other devices (phone, fax) from your line and tested again?

It's just to be really sure you have done all possible before calling Telecom (or whatever provider)...

That's correct- internal wiring is more often the issue. The cable between your house and the street and further down is designed to be waterproof- it has a silicone jelly in it which helps prevent the issues you mention. Internal wiring does not (usually) however have this and a lot of times it's moisture at a jackpoint causing the issue, as well as damaged or degraded internal wiring. If you're up for it and you have the right tools I'd start by disconnecting all the other jackpoints from the first one - careful if you have a monitored alarm, try not to touch anything that has been scotch locked - and go from there, see how the performance is. That will help you narrow the fault down. If you have wiring and maintenance on your phone bill, Telecom/Other provider should cover doing this for you.

No i haven't added anything new to the phone line. it seems the problem has gone away now i turned the modem off for about 20min and back on again late last night and it appears it has fixed itself for now and is back to its normal speed. Earlier on this week they were at the exchange up the road doing something, im not sure if it caused my speed problems though.
