I have two yaggi antenna pointing at two local cell towers, one cell tower (Mt Burnett) was seriously overloaded over the last few weeks as all the holiday makers came into our area, the other one (Takaka) held up fine but is not as fast at night etc.
The rf signal feeds into a Sierra 308 stick and at the moment I can plug in either antenna.
What I would like to do is have both antenna permanently connected so that the Sierra 308 takes data from whichever tower is best, I assume all i need is an amplifier with 2 rf inputs and the system will choose the best path (or both) in the same way a cell phone would. Is this correct?

It will connect to strongest tower, so this will not do what you want it to do.

and your phone would then be transmitting back to both towers, which I am sure telecom would not want since it would be hammering the busy tower you want to avoid with stuff not for it.

Yes or you could possibly rig up a switch system so you could switch between antenna's at the flick of a switch and eliminate down time between changes. How to do this I don't know but just and idea.

Problem is knowing which cellsite is down at which time.
