Looking for some advice.  I live in Newtown, very close to the exchange (about 100 max) and have ADSL2+, and a WAG160N modem/router.  I recently noticed that my broadband speed is a lot slower than I actually thought it was by using my laptop in napier and New Plymouth on family broadband (both Telecom).  I routinely acheive 1.13 (max 1.18) Mbps down and 0.07 Mbps up.  This is using the Telecom speedtest.  I have done the 3 day tests required by Telecom and am awaiting a reply as to what the problem might be.  The modem states I have about 15Mbps down and 945 kbps up.  Telecom says I should have a lot more speed than I do.  I have one phone jack, with one telephone and the modem plugged in, with a new ADSL filter.

If anyone has any great ideas or advice I would love to hear it.  Thanks!

What isolation tests have you done?

Did the isolation test as per Telecom, unplugged everything, only plugged in modem and still had the same issue with the speedtest. as I say, my modem says I have a much faster connection than I achieve, I am running at about 10%. Is fine for day to day internet, painful for downloads of about 20 30 Mb, and Skype quality is poor (everyone else complains about us!)

Are you performing the speed tests with cable connection or wireless?

If you're using wireless I suggest you try a cable and see what results you get.

That is wired. I get the exact same result with the wireless connection.

Could you provide a copy 'n paste of the router statistics regarding your connection to the exchange?

Hi, does the WAG also offer accumulated errors, could be that its got heaps of throughput but all error'd.

I am not sure.  Any ideas on where I would find it or out where that information might be?  I am at wor for most of today (till 2200ish) so could be difficult for me to find out too much today.

Hi, most modems have a log of errors associated with the DSL connection, ie CRC error counts etc, normally this is near or with the line stats, sorry dont have a WAG near by to tell you more.

Apparently the error counts are not able to obtained with the WAG160N, not sure why but seems to be a popular complaint. Have enabled the log function though, maybe this will give me some extra info.

Since your modem is synced at 15 megs, the problem is affecting throughput but can be influenced by line factors. The questionmark about CRC errors could be helped by asking Telecom to put interleaving on. After that I would try a different modem before asking Telecom to check for congestion on their end.

Time to find a new industry!

Interestingly, I tried a WAG200G, and that now gives me 5.5Mbps down and 0.74 Mbps Up according to the speed test, and I now have different values for the DSL Up and down rates, about 7800 Kbps down and 750 Kbps up. Noticeable improvement in page loading and Skype, so might be a WAG160N problem. Have never liked it either! Any suggestions for a replacement? I would also like to have a couple of USB ports in the back for networking....

While I have an extreme dislike for the WAG160N because of the well documented wireless Access Point Isolation disconnection issues (and Linksys/Cisco's inability to fix this thru many firmware updates), I've actually found its ADSL connectivity pretty good. You might want to take some steps to check your wiring etc first, before purchasing a replacement.

Having said that, I've just replaced my WAG160N with a TP-Link TD-W8960N http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=384106 if that helps.

I replaced the WAG160N I had with the TP-Link TD-W8960N as well and haven't looked back.

Had all sorts of syncing problems with the Linksys.

I dont like to bag products in public, but really you need to have a broadcom solution if you want optimum results.
