To roam? Yes, on Telstra's network.

Would one just but a starter pack from Telstra and then start txting back to NZ?

For people to best answer you, you need to provide some information on how you are going to be using it, otherwise we can't accurately use it.

Are you using it to just receive calls? Make and receive calls? Are you going to be calling lots of local (Oz) numbers?

Are you going to be doing a lot of texting? Data use?

You tell us, then we can tell you. :)

Look at what it will cost to do this using your XT SIM, and look at the cost of picking up and doing it with a Telstra prepaid SIM.

The costs for both are out there if you look for them. You are ultimately the only person who can do this as it comes down to whether you're only sending one or two messages or lots of messages.

I suspect your best bet will be to pick up a prepaid over there. Make sure you've got a copy of your contacts on the phone and not just the XT SIM.

If your in the main areas try Virgin Mobile on their International Plan, 10c per min back to NZ (Fixed and Mobile), SMS are 10c too I think? Assuming having an NZ number isn't important (you are looking to buy a SIM pack yes?)

http://www.virginmobile.com.au/mobile-plans-pricing/pre-paid-plans/#home-made

$10 SIM with $10 credit, $20 for 28 days, free Voicemail and V2V calls.

I might be misinterpreting your question, but you cannot put a Telstra texting pack on a Telecom SIM, even if you're roaming on Telstra. You need a Telstra SIM.

What about just get a local AU pre-paid sim/plan with a reasonable amount of 3G data and use skype?

International calling and sms rates are very cheap on Skype.

"Used", in the past tense, is correct :)

It's WCDMA like Telecom now.

If you want to get an idea of how much it would cost to use your phone in Australia, take a look at www.telecomroaming.co.nz .
