If like me your only Internet is via XTs USB Modem ZTE MF 636 Do not install the latest Mac OS Lion. OSX10.7
Great OS Can't say the same for Telecom software

Have uninstalled and reinstalled several times. It's my only Internet, the software will not install. OK it didn't install properly with S.Leopard OSX 10.6 but I could get it to work. On account 4 GB plan.
At the moment we are parked at my son's place and pinching his WiFi. Bugger.

Just to add insult to injury the iPad 2 won't connect to XT via a separate 2 GB Sim Prepay with over $72 credit on it. It just says No Cellular Account.. Have removed, cleaned and replaced sim. No change.

Hope your day is better than mine. Any ideas?? Anyone.

I was told the iPad 2 would set up automatically with the SIM. No APN and no idea what they are.
It has been working..

Maybe the original salesperson had done it for you.

From memory it is:
settings>cellular data>apn settings.

In APN enter: internet.telecom.co.nz
leave user and PW blank.

Turn ipad off and on and try to access the net

Wait for bootup tone, hold down 2 and 3 on the keyboard until apple logo appears.  Put's it into 32 bit mode and driver will work.

the Mac drivers for the MF636 are 32bit only - Lion is 64bit by default. Until ZTE come out with new drivers the device will never work in 10.7 unless you boot up in 32bit mode. I also have one and it's a hassle to have to boot into 32bit mode to use the modem

Thanks to the great guys at the Cambridge Telecom store I'm now online with Lion and still on XT.
The Sierra Wireless 306 USB Modem has a software update available for Lion.. Works a treat and on 64 bit too.
Have also renewed my 2 yr 4 GB on account Data plan..

Ashka: Great OS Can't say the same for Telecom software

As you found out, it's ZTE software, not Telecom. Also, every time a new Mac OS X comes out, some software breaks. We had to buy new versions of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign for my wife's Mac on its last update, and I read that previous versions of Adobe Photoshop won't work on Lion.

It's not a "Telecom" thing only... It's part of Apple's policy. While Microsoft makes Windows bigger because they have a policy of supporting older third party software on their newer versions, this is not how Apple works.

No...... The software used with the ZTE USB Modem is/was telecom's connect software and NZ Telecom branded not ZTE. I usually know which and who's software I'm using :)

Anyway the sierra wireless isn't using telecom software so no worries..

Hi Ashka,

I had the same issue after Lion upgrade as the original MF636 software does not support 32bit, however I then installed the software (vT02) for the latest ZTE device the MF180 and now the 636 is working fine on 64bit.

Can someone one else try this and let me know if it works?  Should also work for the ZTE 626 and 668.  Download from here http://www.zte.co.nz/downloads/software/MF180_MAC_Install.mpkg.zip

re your point above, there isn't a MAC version of TNZ Connect Me yet, so it must have been the ZTE software you were trying Wink

Cheers

Jonny Scott

Hey Mort I tried the MF180 download package on a ZTE MF636 through Telstra Bigpond in Australia. Not only does it make the modem start working it also kickstarted the Bigpond Modem Manager software which now works in 64 bit as well.

Both the Bigpond Wireless Broadband (V 2.18) and Telecom Connection Manager open at the same time.

There is a slight delay as the modem initialises but then all is fine and I can connect through the Bigpond software. You can also quit the Telecom CM without any issues and it keeps working.

Thanks for the tip which has worked a treat.

It's a (generic) software package with a boatload of operator logos inside, it's ZTE software :)

Thank you SO MUCH. I just convinced my mother-in-law to buy a MacBook Pro and was gutted when I found that the T-Stick she had wouldn't work with Lion in it. Tried this out and worked a treat. She has a 626.

Thanks again

Steve
