I bought a new TD-W8960N and am having a few issues with it.

It drops the line regularly and is generally a lot slower in download and line sync speeds than my old asus DSL-N11.
It only seems to sync at around 17/1800kbps which is giving me top download speeds of 1.7MB/s
my DSL N11 could top out at 2100kbps line and had a pretty quick download of 2.2MB per sec.

I have a pretty good ADSL line.

Are there any specific telecom settings i should be using?
Im not even sure why i got a new modem/router in the first place :S

Hi, to drop the line on a regular basis but with otherwise good line stats and low attenuation could be due to incorrect filtering, can you explain what filters are in use and how arranged.

The modem runs on a separate fax line.
Just the tp-link and fax machine connected via the tp-link filter (I tried my old filters too) into the phone socket in the wall.

Thing is i just expected to plug it in and go as my old modem runs very reliably on the line but the tp-link isn't stable at all.

Have you loaded the lattest firmware, I have found often TP links are shipped with incorrect firmware.

I had the same issue when switching to this unit. Great sync rates but dropping the connection all over the show. Did not change anything bar swapping out an old DSE modem/router which had been rock solid for years.

I did the firmware update which didn't make any difference at first, but now has sorted itself out and is fine.

Was very weird.

Updated to latest firmware and it seems to be stable now.(doesn't drop)

But still slow sync at around 1700kbps....

How far are youfrom a cabinet or exchange? With sync speeds like that you've either a very long distance away or have internal wiring problems.

Theres no reason why it shouldnt just work.
My old asus DSL-N11 modem connected at 21910 (Kbps.) and I could download files at 2.2MBs max.

Im under 500metres from exchange.
No issues with my line.

Its very rare for a full achieved sync of much more than 19Mb/s even if you are sitting right on top of the exchange, this is due to the conservative 12dB noise margin Telecom uses. I dont think I have ever seen a Broadcom modem (which is what the TPlink is) sync much more than mentioned, the fact that your other modem managed to negotiate a higher speed is fine, does not mean the TPlink is under performing in any way just a function of how different modems interact for the most stable and fast compromise line.
