It seems to be happening quite a lot since I switched to Telecom...

As of a few hours ago my internet has slowed to a crawl.

speedtest

Like literally a crawl. Did the Speedtest multiple times and got the same result, with different servers too. I tried unplugging and replugging the router but to no avail. YouTube videos buffer for a few seconds then stop. I tried ringing support but infuriatingly their call centre closes at 9pm... I have also confirmed it's not just my computer.

Is anyone else experiencing this or is it just me?

1.Post line stats
2.Do isolation tests
3.Report other devices (fax, phones, alarms, modems) on the line
4.Report filters on the line

What are you ADSL sync stats, attenuation, and your distance from the nearest cabinent or exchange?

You'll also need to provide a rundown of your phone wiring, including whether you have a master filter installed or not, and what basic steps you have taken to isolate your wiring as the fault such as performing a basic isolation test by removing all devices and plugging your modem into the first jackpoint where the wiring enters your home.

I assume this is what you mean by line stats:
DSL Type:ITU-T G.992.5Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:1.144 / 17.430Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]:1,98 / 7,94Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:12,6 / 0,0Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:2,5 / 5,5SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:12,6 / 9,9

Isolation tests?

There is one other landline in the house with a filter on it and that's it. I am using the supplied "Technicolor" modem/router.

Edit: I have no idea where the closest exchange is. Haven't been in Wellington for long. Is there a map somewhere?

It's been working fine until now. I unplugged the landline and the internet promptly cut out entirely and refused to reconnect until I plugged the landline back in. The modem is connected to a different jack than the landline. They both have filters on them.

Are you sure you're not over your usage limit and been shaped back to dialup? Check on yourtelecom and check your broadband usage.

That reminded me of when I was switched over from Big Time to a normal plan, the 20GB one and I thought it was so damn slow but it turns out I just burned the cap in under 2 days and didn't even realise I had been moved off Big Time yet.

Well now I feel silly.

I'm a few gigs over. I was under the impression instead of being throttled they'd just charge more

Luckily it ends on the 14th of February. Does that mean the end of the 14th or the beginning? Will I have to last an entire day with slow internet or just a few hours?

Edit: Also is it possible to buy more data by ringing them or something? Like a 2gb pack or something?

Usually cap's roll over on the night of the day stated which would be Midnight on the night of the 14th for you (You will be uncapped as soon as the date changes to the 15th)

It is possible to ring up or possibly go online and have yourself switched over to the same sized plan that is uncapped (Charged per GB over limit) which I believe with telecom resets your data limit early due to how it is setup in their system and from what I have heard shouldn't cost you any more to do.

Same thing happened to me a few weeks back, but it was 5 days until roll-over. I forgot how slow dialup speeds actually were... Was hell for a few days :-)

If you log into your account to check usage there is also a setting you can change so that xtra will alert you by email when you've only got a certain amount of data left. It really helps.

Glad it was a simple as that.  You can change your plan once a month for free I believe your usage is set back to zero, so if you change to an overage rather than rate shaped plan there shouldn't be any more that you pay for your monthly bill.

Telecom have an option for $2/GB overage instead of capped at limit, it's a simple plan change. You can make the change via a form online or ring them up and request the change.

Just be careful though on the overage option as you will not be capped/limited and simply charged for every GB over your data cap... ie: if you use 10GB over your normal data cap you get charged $20.

It can easily cause bill shock if someone leaves torrents or p2p running and uses a ton of data over the normal data cao.

Actually I think I'll just stay on this plan. It's a lot faster today, even though it's still being throttled. I get like 2mbps on speed tests.

I've been experiencing very slow wireless broadband with Xtra for months now, basically ever since school holidays started end Nov 2011.  Also had really bad dropouts where internet would fail.  Wireless router was checked by Telecom and was fine.  Connection has always been stated as great according to the icon status on my laptop, however not the case in reality.  I wonder whether, as I live in a small town in a rural area, the Telecom servers have reached their capacity for all the online traffice.  I'm not a techie so this may not be applicable!  I do notice things really slow down at times of day when people are likely to return home from the office and go online.

I've changed my antivirus software to a resource friendly one and this has improved things a bit.  I've also changed my laptop settings to optimise performance rather than appearance.

Hmmmppph.  Any helpful suggestions very welcome!
