Can we please get an eta on when an update to the phone to 2.3.5 or greater will be out, the battery drain on the current 2.3.3 is getting very old.
The phones don't even last a day with limited usages unless you have some 3rd party battery saving app installed.

I know someone talked to the team however there has been no new update from when you released the phone.

Even vodafone are on 2.3.5.

I don't want to have to root as I should not have too, I also don't want to flash via Odin with another telcos firmware as I have no idea what this will do with the modem firmware in the phone.

Any old modem firmware works fine on the SGS2 with Telecom. I've got a 4.0.3 radio on mine and it works happily.

But, as you say, you shouldn't have to.

Given the only differences in the 2 firmwares (Telecom/VF) are the contents of a single folder in the filesystem, and there should be only a couple of very minor changes required to a couple of files in that folder between 2.3.3 and 2.3.5, the lack of an update at this stage is pretty poor.

Thats pretty shonky!
My wife wants to upgrade to a galaxy SII and insists it has to be Telecom (for reasons I just cant fathom).
Anyway - you have now given me another reason to tell her not to go with Telecom.

Do you think they are supplying new S2s with 2.3.3?

I see that Dick Smith had the S2 on special and it appears to be the quad band (telecom/vodafone) capable model. I guess that would be a standard samsung android version and not customised to any carrier? I assume updates would be via samsung in that case....

Thanks for the info, have been told that some firmware does not let the telecom GT-I9100T work outside of main cities (i.e. sets the radio to 900/2100) so in the city you use 2100 but as soon as you leave then it no longer picks up 850.

I'm just a little pee'd at telecom, they release the phone which has a battery drain problem (which has now been fixed in 2.3.5 and up) and everyone time i ask on twitter / here we get a "will ask" then nothing.
And if i do something to fix the problem "flash an unbranded firmware to 2.3.6" and it breaks then telecom will not cover it as i flashed it, yet they will do nothing to roll out the fix.

it really is a "damned if you do and damned if you don't" problem

The problem is all telecom phones are on 2.3.3 its the only firmware for telecom that is out (from aug2011) yes phones have chips for "Quad band" however it depends on the radio firmware as some only let you use 900/2100 (think vodafone is set to this) however the telecom one does cover 850/900/2100 (what we use in NZ). That is one of the reasons i got the telecom one.

That is why I am a little funny about flashing it as i don't know if the radio will be updated as well.

I have seen a few posts saying that once people have flashed a telecom phone it stopped working outside of 2100 coverage and no longer picks up 850

it's just wrong modem firmware, if you flash it and that happens find another modem

also it could possibly have the 850mhz frequency but not have it selected - on samsung phones, you can dial *#*#0011#*#* and go back through the menus until you see "DEBUG SCREEN" at the top and "[8] PHONE CONTROL", choose that then [7] NETWORK CONTROL and [2] BAND SELECTION and manually choose the bands you want it to look for

edit: if you're going through the trouble of flashing your phone, flashing a modem as well isn't much more of a hassle. the *#*#0011#*#* menu also tells you what frequency cell site you're attached to, so you can test it right there by disabling 2100mhz and see if it finds an 850

Plus vodafone is keep people up to date with this
*******************************************
"Official word from the team over at Samsung!

" Samsung is currently working through testing to deploy an ICS update to Vodafone Galaxy S II customers. A rigorous testing process is followed to ensure any release meets Vodafone and Samsung standards of customer quality.

The release date for this update will be confirmed within the next few weeks, and we will post an update at the appropriate time. ”

I would like to thank Samsung for this update! Great news and I am sure many will be looking forward to the ICS update! "
******************************************************

All I really want from telecom is a "yes we know we are working on it and expect rollout/more info in x weeks"

With vodafone people know it will come due to the size of vodafone (UK etc)
Telecom is NZ only and just don't want a "its all to hard and we have new phones coming out with it"

Last thing I want is every other SG2 in the world getting an update and telecom saying "well 2.3.3 works so lets just leave it"

Hello

All 9100/T models are full quad band 3G/WCDMA. None are set to a particular 900/2100 3G setting. The Vodafone 9100 model is no different to the 9100T (Negligible differences). Borrowed my workmate's 9100 (official vodafone) with my 9100T (official telecom) and My XT sim ran fine in his 9100 and his Voda and 2 Degrees sims ran fine in my 9100T.

Running a custom ROM but keen to see what's on Telecom's 2.3.6 updated firmware

- Telstra HTC Touch Pro2 - Energy ROM WM6.5.5 20 Oct/Cyanogen Mod Froyo 2.2 - R.I.P
- AT&T Galaxy S Captivate 16GB on XT (now with brother)
- Samsung Galaxy S2 on XT- Runs ICS 4.0.3 Resurrection Remix 9.2
- Business Hours - Work In The Electricity Industry, After Hours - DJ/Turntablist - Will Scratch Vinyl For Free'
- What's next??? S3?

Custom ROM = custom firmware

For a crash course

go here

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=83026&page_no=192

and work backwards :-)

Customer roms out have GB 2.3.5 2.3.6 2.3.7(i think) and now ICS 4.0. Have custom kernels, and can have better performance, with some side effects. Normal with custom roms. Also breaks your warranty, so risks involved.

I have a firmware checker for Telecom 9100T. Will nosey now to see if anything has changed.

Edit:

Product Code: GT-I9100LKJTNZ
Latest firmware: I9100TDOKH1/I9100TTNZKH1/I9100TDOKG2/I9100TDOKH1
Modified: 6/08/2011 11:58:06 a.m.
Filename: GT-I9100T_TNZ_1_20110806115756.zip.enc2

Same firmware. No changes yet.

Possibly the reason why they aren't bothering with releasing a Gingerbread update for the S2 at this stage is because the official ICS release is just around the corner?

I'm running a custom 2.3.6 ROM, and I flashed the modem from the stock Telecom's 2.3.3 ROM. 850MHz band works fine for me.

Also for better battery life, I disabled Fast Dormancy. Finally, I bought the official 2000mAH extended battery from Samsung, and it's totally, absolutely worth it. Even makes the phone look better, and feel better. No more odd bit of plastic jutting out at the bottom. As a bonus, the camera glass doesn't get scratched anymore when you put the phone on its back. :)

I have a Telecom I9100T but running custom firmware (Checkrom) which is Android 2.3.6 and using the DCKL1 Modem. Pretty sure Telecom are never going to update the device officially. They are terrible for firmware updates across all of their handsets.

Did you just flash the modem by Obin?

I really dont want to have to root the phone as well.

Well looks like i might have just find a standard firmware and flash via obin, that way when ICS comes out i wont have to wait for Telecom
