Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray ST18a running Android 2.3.4 Originally on Telecom’s “Skinny”. (Bootloader is “locked”). Paid $30 network unlock fee to Skinny.

Installed Telecom “XT” SIM card. ‘Phone did not ask for unlock code. Setup apparently straight-forward, including able to download Telecom internet settings (APNs etc) automatically.

However Voicemail number (ie dial “1”) shows as +64204864236 which is Skinny’s number. Attempted to edit number via Settings> Call Settings>Voicemail settings to Telecom’s +6483083210 result is error message “Call settings error Voicemail number change unsuccessful ...” and number remains as Skinny’s.

Swap to 2degrees SIM card, no problem, asked for unlock code, accepted. Voicemail number is correctly 2degrees with no intervention on my part.

Switch back to Telecom SIM card: Voicemail number back to Skinny’s! (Not even stuck at 2degrees number). Tried other experiments such as setting to Telecom Voicemail number without SIM card present, but on insertion of Telecom SIM card it switches Voicemail number back to Skinny.

I have talked to *123 and Telecom Willis Street Wellington Help desk as to whether it can be provisioned in some other way but no progress.

Anyone got any insights? Is it something to do with Skinny & XT being on the same platform?

Not sure how to solve this (likely software?), but if you have the Voicemail viewer switched on, you are sent an SMS with a hyperlinked number that will dial straight into that message, so no need to dial 083210/122 or press and hold one.

Try going into the Phone application and enter;

*004*083210#

I just use 083210 for their voicemail number, seems to work fine - that'll try to "brute force" the right number into the system (if that works on that model, it may not).

Presumably their "Skinny" SIM uses the same MCC/MNC as the regular XT network and the phone has cached it.

If that's the case, then a factory reset via the "Security" menu in settings may fix it as long as you do it with the XT SIM installed.

*004*083210# produces an error message unfortunately: "Call forwarding Connection problem or invalid MMI code" (I have also unsuccessfully tried *5005*86*83210# which has been mentioned elsewhere in connection w. iPhone Voicemail on XT.)

However even if they had worked the number would not be in international format for roaming o/s.

Factory reset w. (or w.o.) XT SIM card installed does not change situation.

Thanks for the suggestion but I am rather hoping for a smooth fix so the button behaves in a standard way as documented rather than a workaround (the "1" is convenient to get back to Voicemail box to review all messages even if using Voicemail Viewer.)
