Simon in the bestmate thread brought up Telecoms release about number portability.
Since that thread is about VF's Bestmate promotion, discussion about telecoms release is better suited in here.

Simon:

Move to Telecom and keep your mobile number

This means on 1 April 2007 you can make the move to Telecom AND you get to keep your current 021 or 029 mobile number.

I'm wondering how the boost mobile monster text plan will work with this, deal is $10 for 1000 texts to 027/027...what happens when texting a cdma phone with a 021 or 029 number?

I can't wait for this to come into effect. I probably won't switch carriers, but it will mean the end of price segregation and open a whole new wave of competition.

Or, it will result in people being charged copious amounts for not knowing which network people are on. One of the two.

A non-event in the UK - i was there when it was introduced in 4 phases, from 1999-2004. Total switching was about .00125%, or 50k subs a year. I wonder if it's gone up?

In Australia I know that if you make a call to a phone on a different network, your handset will beep before ringing to warn you. Not sure how texting will work, maybe Telecom and Vodafone can reach some agreement to exchange text messages at a rate of 0c between carriers....

Whatever way you look at it, from November 1st, the mobile market will be changing for the better.

They can just easily change the terms of the plan...  "$10 for 1000 text for Telecom-Telcom Mobiles"....

Of course, there might be the confusion between "who" is on Vodafone and "who" is on Telecom....  But oh well, just ask your friends/mates when you get their number..  It's what I normally ask my Aus friends anyway...
