hi, was just posting something, on my mac using firefox, and after reviewing the thread i had just created i noticed at least 80% of the content i was viewing was ads, with a TINY vertical rectangle of text.

is this intentional or is there something wrong?

Screenshot? The text will flow depending on the size of the window - if you have your browser set to be a narrow window then the text will flow as a tiny vertical rectangle... Have you tried maximising the window?

Go to another website and look all the ads there that are practically all "SMS scams", I even white list this site from my adblocker as the ads are well placed and often actually useful, I think the ads are actually selected rather than "take it all"

I prefer the content here as it's usually better based than major newspapers. A major newspaper was talking about "RNC towers" today, lol..

yeah. when i realised after i initially bought it up that it was in fact intentional, i decided this wasnt really the kind of place i want to participate.

of course then when someone else mentioned it i simply expressed my personal opinion, which is that most of your site looks like you sprayed it with an ads shotgun.

your choice, your site.

my right to express my opinion too, unless theres something wrong with that?

id hardly call it "complaining" but if it makes you feel better to paint me as some sort of unreasonable whinging malcontent then whatever floats your boat mate :)

Ads = money
Money = keeps websites alive.

If you don't like the ads then give them the money yourself by subscribing.

I dont mind most of the ad's but the MSDN ones are really infuriating when they put bubbles over the middle of the screen. Almost as bad as the burger king guy on stuff that tears the page open. Flash ads that are transperant and catch clicks like that (the msdn captures clicks for half the screen) are really awful.

That MSDN ad is very annoying and I have also mistakenly clicked on it several times. The rest of the ads are no problem.

It's a fair point any animated, Flash, or Silverlight ads are begging to be blocked (and are in my browsers).

Sadly life has become about making money. I just had to increase my fees from 30-100%. I think that the advertising is 'okay' but only on a 22" widescreen.

I am visually impaired so when I use the site on a 17" it looks as he describes 80% adverts. Maybe something could be worked out with a % sizing or some tricky css that detects the screen res.

personally I like to work with sizes that are 900px wide which allows for better viewing on non-widescreen monitors and even mobiles.

It's not "all about money". I work full time on this site. There are hosting fees, domain fees, firewalls fees, data traffic fees, salaries, GST, tax, ACC, travel, postage and other stuff to pay.

Interesting article. I hadn't realised that by blocking ads, people were depriving a site of revenue. I thought their browser still loaded the ads, but just didn't display them.

However, I've never bothered blocking ads myself, as sometimes they are interesting.

There are two types of ads I take exception to:

1) Popup ads which stream video without asking your permission. NZ Herald is especially guilty of this, and it is a real PITA when I am using Mobile Broadband, thus consuming my data allocation without my permission. Thankfully, GZ is not guilty of using this kind of ad.

2) Ads such as the MSDN one which grab any mouse clicks in nearby areas of the screen. This is a breach of good advertising etiquette IMO. You expect an ad to react if you click on it, but it is not kosher for an ad to grab mouse clicks from adjacent areas of space, which it shouldn't have access to. To my mind, it is a stupid approach because the advertiser is presumably being billed for unintended "click thrus" which get closed as soon as they open.

Even though there are now a lot of ads on GZ, I don't mind seeing them so long as they adhere to the two rules above. It's not my decision to make of course, but just my 2c worth as a long-time user of this site.
