This came up back in May 2008 in thread 21908, which has since been locked.

Now that we have the goodness of 'single page' view, it would be great if the user could change the view so that the most recent posts showed first. Would be very handy when following a very long thread. (I do know about the normal pages view and being able to click on the most recent page etc.)

Any chance MF?

alternatively... a link on each thread when logged in that takes you straight to the page with the oldest unread post. - that link could just be on the "new" icon/image in the thread list(s) (live.g.c.n too..)

MF - Haven't seen or heard anything so I guess you haven't had a chance to look at this...?

This would be excellent and it's how most other forums work.  I'm not sure how they do it, probably something to do with keeping track of the date/time the forum last saw you and then any message after that date/time is considered to be new for you.

Well, guess what? That's exactly what we do to show the "New" icon.

Yes but you can't easily jump to the 'first unread post' which is a very handy feature, especially in long threads. I find myself just going to the last page of a long thread and making my way backwards until I hit a post I think I have already seen...

Or just work backwards until the first post that doesn't have a "New!" icon in the top left corner of the post.

Being able to jump directly to the first new post is the bit that's currently missing.

Also is there any chance that the number of emails that we receive when we subscribe to a thread can be reduced?  At the moment if I'm subscribed to a very active thread then it's not uncommon for me to go to bed at night and wake up in the morning to find 30 or more emails telling me that a new message has been posted in a thread that I'm watching, each new message generates an email.  I've seen other forums that send just one email which says "Someone has posted a new message to a thread that you've subscribed to. There may be more replies but we won't tell you about them until you've visited the forum." (or words to that effect).  This would declutter my inbox and reduce the number of emails that the forum would need to send out.

*sigh*

Visit your profile page and change the email freqquency there. There are instructions in every email sent to do this. I personally have mine set to one notification per hour and it works well that way.

Oops, sorry, the option is called "Forum notification style" and I was looking for something about "frequency".  All good now!
