The volume of my notification emails is really overwhelming today so I have another request to add please:

# Send notifications ONLY if not currently logged into the forum

or

# Suspend notifications ONLY if currently logged into Geekzone Live page

I prefer to have the notifications option enabled for the times when I need to be alerted to visit the site to view a subscribed topic, but when I am already logged in and monitoring the Live page these emails are superfluous.

I dread to imagine how much unnecessary email traffic flows out of your mail server due to lack of these options which seem to be standard on other forums I visit.

Thanks for considering, even if only for the sake of reducing server traffic.

Cheers :o)

Curious here. Which forums have these options and what are those options called exactly in those forums?

I vote against these options being introduced. The notification system works fine and in line with every other forum.

I am referring to the email notifications section in your personal profile...

Click on "Edit my profile" > scroll 2/3 down the page and you will see the heading "Forum and Geekzone Blog options"

Do you visit many other forums? My requests have been common options on most of the ones I have owned, admined or belonged to...

I'm aware of those. But you expressed originally:

So my question remains the same:

1. Which forums have the options you are asking for?
2. What are those options named in those other forums you are referring to?

Thanks -

I am curious about the "volume". Have you tried to one notification per hour or one a day?

freitasm: I am curious about the "volume". Have you tried to one notification per hour or one a day?

Regarding volume, I just counted 39 in my trash can for today, and I have fiddled with the settings of one per hour (and also day), but what appears to be happening is that when I visit the topic to read the new reply it is resetting itself, so that even if I am still on that page and new replies are made I get another email for the next reply.

Not sure if I am explaining this well Mauricio, but I hadn't considered that it was a bug rather than a feature.

Should I still be receiving email notifications on any of the "until next visit to the discussion" options if I actually have that discussion open in my browser already? I quite often just leave threads I am following open in a tab in firefox and refresh the page if I notice on the Live page (which I also have open in a permanent tab) that there's new activity.

Not ignoring you gzt, just wanted to go back into a couple of my old forums (no longer active online) and get a more specific answer for you. And also in case I might embarass myself and find it was a mod that I had installed myself rather than part of the vanilla forum package.

From memory it went something like Option 1: check box to receive email notification then a sub-option like 1a: check box to not send email if you are already logged in. I also recall a similar option on one of the old Invision boards which was similar for PM's and had a 1b: check to receive popup notification instead of email if already logged in. But I inherited that board from previous admin already very heavily modded and before the days when I had the tech skills to setup my own forum from scratch with customisations.

You explained well, thanks. The way it works is as you already understood:

- reply to a topic
- receive notifications for that topic every time/hour/day/once only
- once you visit the topic the notification resets and the cycle starts again from that point

We do not track what pages you are on at any moment so we wouldn't be able to not send this notification.

Funny thing, today no emails are comming thru for watched topics even though there are new posts showing up.

So begs the question, Geekzone problem or email provider problem?

Ok so it seems my email provider is at fault here, (cue the big surprise - not)

Done an email change to my gmail account clicked on the link only to be told that the change failed... but it didn't as my profile did show the changed email address.

Oh well, things are working thats what matters

I understand what you are saying Mauricio, but that is not required for my request.

All that would be needed to track is whether a user is logged in to the forum or not and a sub-option to the master notification option that reflects that yes/no status. In php code (which I am still very very very noobie at) I think it would be something like:

1. Default option to receive forum replies >  IF yes THEN send email
1A.But not if I am logged in > AND IF user status = logged in THEN don't send email

Anyhoo, it seemed like a simple idea to implement when I suggested it. I didn't mean to cause a fuss or seem like one of those picky ungrateful newcomers who blah blah about somewhere else doing it better than you do. And I apologise for taking the bait when networkn made his/her "every other forum" comment.

So, let me rewind the topic and restate my request in one simple sentence, as I should have done in the beginning:

Please can I have an automated option to suspend email notifications whilst I am already logged into the forum.

Cheers for considering :o)

Yes my volumes have significantly decreased over the last few days. I was getting 100+ a day, now maybe 6.
