Good Morning

ive been following a few topics now where some of the posters don't respond for 12-24 hours then when they do come back and respond they quote one post, then a second, then a third etc and you end up with 3-5 posts from the same person in a row

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=48&topicid=154324&page_no=5#1162614 for example

i just find it makes a thread longer and more messy

having a multi quote button would allow users the ability to select multiple posts they wish to quote. when they have finished selected they could either hit quote on the last quoted post or hit compose new reply and all the quoted material would show up so they could compose their replies.

failing that you could make it so that if they make a post within say 30 minutes of their last post and no one has posted after their last post it automatically adds it to the bottom of their last post.

i dont know if its possible but just spinning ideas

Jason

I'm new here, and one of the first things I tried to do was quote multiple posts. Having to do it manually is a little tedious, and while nice to have, it's not what I'd call essential.

What I would also like to see is a quote button for the first post. If you're not the first to reply, being able to quote the first post makes it clear which post you are actually responding to.

Lol, couldn't quote OP but this is the best idea IMHO, plus a quote button on the OP's post! :)

I agree it does.

Jase2985: having a multi quote button would allow users the ability to select multiple posts they wish to quote. when they have finished selected they could either hit quote on the last quoted post or hit compose new reply and all the quoted material would show up so they could compose their replies.

I don't think it would work. Some people would not even realise these checkboxes to select multiple posts are there and the "multiple quotes in multiple replies" would continue to happen.

Jase2985: failing that you could make it so that if they make a post within say 30 minutes of their last post and no one has posted after their last post it automatically adds it to the bottom of their last post.

This wouldn't work because in those 30 minutes a lot of people would have read the last reply and moved on. If something is added to that reply it's no longer "NEW" for those people and they wouldn't even look at the old reply before going to the next one - in the assumption they already

We used to have a QUOTE button the OP and then some people instead of just writing their reply in the reply box IMMEDIATELY BELOW IT would hit the QUOTE button and have the entire OP repeated in the first reply. If you think multiple quotes is messy, having someone quoting the OP and the first reply and then someone quoting this reply immediately after makes things a lot worse.

At the end I removed the QUOTE button from the OP. It will come automatically back after there are a few replies or the thread has more than one page.

It is almost always just one or two people in a thread worst offending. The worst ones tend to be some pointless and only personal he said/she said argument that runs for several pages where the outcome (sigh) will never add anything to the understanding of the topic. Tends to kill all genuine interest in the topic as well.

A short post indicating your enjoyment of the topic is being compromised by this behavior could have more effect than a multiple quote button.

Thanks for the reasoned response @Freitasm, it seems it's all been thought through before, so no worries :)

Bringing this back up this is happening again and again and sometimes its downright annoying

example is these 2 threads
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=141&topicid=166281&page_no=2#1256356
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=48&topicid=166232&page_no=5#1256377

There are 8 posts in a row from the same person. its a bit ridiculous

back to my whole 30 minute thing doesnt even need to be that long 5-10 would surfice, most of those above are within 5 minutes, how many people would read a thread within 5 minutes? on other forums it re-enables the unread flag on the post because the "added post" changes the time on the original post so the forum then uses the new post info from the new post but applies it to the old post.

it also adds an inline break between the old post and the new post, something like:

- - - Updated (date + time) - - -

new post info ends up down here here

most of the other forums i frequent have both multi quote and the automatic updating enabled to prevent strings of posts from the same user.

Just a thought, and to vent my frustration

Most people here are well behaved. Don't really see the need for a limitation.

The one that gets me is two people carrying on a relatively personal argument using a page of quote and then adding just one line to that per post after post lol : ).

but its not a limitation though, its an extension, it will also make those more frequent users of the forum have an easier time if they can quote multiple posts easier than having to open new windows etc.

and yes i know where you are coming from

Yeah nah its different previous post was suggesting a limitation.

Back to multiple quotes topic you can do that already with two tabs quote button and copy/paste.

Well the thing is you'll be schooling the same one or two people how to use it anyway, so you might as well just tell them to use copy paste instead.

maybe automatically trimming a large portion of that inside a quote block, with the ability to expand that quote.

often people do quote something thats been quoted, thats been quoted, thats been quoted, thats been quoted and on and on.  and that single post takes up an entire page with just a single line added to it.

could always make it so when you quote more then say 2 nested posts it will strip the rest and only leave the newest 2 nested ones?

Personally don't see the point of crushing useful functionality just to prevent the same n people abusing it.
