I feel like we need to make the search bar about 10 times bigger with a nice big flashing boarder around it.

How many god dam 'recommend me a router' threads are there?!?!! Or how many 'My wifi sucks, help me make it l33t'?!?!

ARGGGGHHH!!!!!!! Does my bloody head in!!!!

There is one there at the moment about extending out to a garage. THAT WAS DISCUSSED JUST LAST WEEK IN ANOTHER THREAD!!!!!!!!!

Even if we do it... people won't use it.

If you see a dup you can always report the post, we will lock with a link to the previous one.

I KNOW!!! SO FRUSTRATING.

I don't know how many times I have just pasted the thread title in to the search bar and found an identical thread.

Actually, the search sucks really bad, that has also been discussed several times IIRC. I've NEVER found, using the included search, threads I know exist.

You can't curse people for not finding relevant threads when they don't appear in a search.

You get FAR more relevant results by using google search with [keywords] site:http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp

You must be doing something wrong because THE SEARCH IS A GOOGLE CUSTOM SEARCH.

First Google indexes Geekzone very quickly. For example I've just searched for this thread's own subject "Feature request: Flashing..." and received the following result:

  • This thread is only minutes old is already indexed
  • It's the first result when ordered by RELEVANCE
  • It's also the first result when ordered by DATE (something I added late last year)
  • On top of the search there are four tabs: ALL RESULTS, FORUMS ONLY, CONTENT ONLY and FREITASM.
By clicking "FORUMS ONLY" you actually get the similar results as {[keywords] site:geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp}

Alright, it looks like it's improved a lot since I abandoned it. My sincere apologies.

Other forums search threads when making your post to see If a similar discussion already exists

Additionally you could lengthen the time before threads lock, its a bit quick

A really annoying 'let me search for that on geekzone for you' function? ; ). (LMGTFY)

But also some questions get different answers every week and there is some value in that.

freitasm: 30 days is quick?

I think 6 months is probably more like it. Personally, I'd Turn auto lock off, this is the only forum I know hat does it and I think it's counter productive.

If you want people to use existing threads, then leave them open. If you don't, don't complain about the same threads all over again.

I don't want people to use the same threads. This is the problem YOU don't see. What we see here is someone who has a problem with [RED ISP], find a six years old topic on Google and come straight with a "I have the same problem" when it's not even close.

There's a reason why we put the auto lock in place. The same way people don't search for recent things, they also don't discern old things. And because some of these are pretty technical or time related it's counter productive to let people bring old, unrelated, dead topics back to the surface.

Changed from 30 to 90 days now. A lot more posts should appear as unlocked right now.

I think the search bar could be made larger and fit in more with the website.

I did check if the ads would get in the way whilst being logged out and they didn't so I think this is okay.

Placeholder search bar 1 would fit more easily whilst placeholder search bar 2 would be more noticeable as it's directly in view.
This is where I think the search bar could go anyways so my opinion.

EDIT

And it thumbnailed despite me hitting not to constrain proportions.
