I was just posting in a thread about gps trackers, when one of the other members remembered some software I was using....and i got to thinking.  What if there was a was of storing software, skills, geek bents where if there was a question on a topic you could @ them, or there's some sort of notification when a topic is posted on your interest.  

 

Probably leads on to topic tagging or something.  But was just an initial thought that floated through my head.

Tagging is an interesting idea. The problem is taxonomy. People use different names for things - and if it's hard to create and maintain a taxonomy within a government department, imagine within an almost 100k people community.

The way I've seen tagging done other places (stackoverflow etc) if under x post count you can't create new tags

I wrestle with maintaining skill datasets in my job.  It gets difficult fast with specialised skills and to be honest we don't do it that well.

 

Problem 1) is creating a widely applicable list of skills that are sufficiently differentiating;

 

Problem 2) is knowing what skills are relevant for solving particular problems.

Skills might have been too linked in like.  I was thinking of stuff like, I like media centres, media, can talk about high speed printing, programming apis, ip cameras, windows, dot net programming, python.  

 

Just random crap that I may have a passing interest in.  Given you have to attribute yourself, only those interested would do it.

It's kind of the same problem - sufficient differentiation

 

Someone might be a guru in python when programming PIDs but not much chop at some other aspect.

 

I guess you could just hit up everyone with python listed and see who responds.

 

Anyhow just my 2c
