I'm keen to understand what might warrant something as serious as blocking an entire ASN.

Personally, I just choose to not be a dick and pay my $25 for an ad-free Geekzone - but everyone is different I guess.

I think you know well that even the small one line message on top asking for either whitelist or subscribing was being removed. That was overkill.

The first time I've seen (10+ Years) such overkill tactics is trying to counter adblocking. Why not just issue small text warning? Or just submit the site to the Acceptable Ads List?

 

@mp3geek failed to mention he maintains one of the AdBlock lists.

That specific list is extremely strict on Geekzone - even testing for adblock and asking people to consider whitelisting or subscribe is blocked. And mind you this is not even blocking people from accessing the content, just asking for people to consider their options.

This is not what happens with other sites. It seems mp3geek has a special grudge against Geekzone and use his position as a maintainer of one of the AdBlock lists to keep us from even offering options to our visitors.

As mentioned many times over the last 15 years, Geekzone can only run with ad revenues or subscriptions, so yeah whatever mp3geek does affects the whole community.

@freitasm I am concerned about this as I use PiHole at home, but do not want to block anything from Geekzone (and in fact I should REALLY subscribe, will do that today).

Can you give more specifics on the adblock you are talking about?  Do you know what services use this?

PiHole won't work I am afraid as it does a blanket block of all tracking / ad services on a DNS level. I, too use this at home as my sister does go onto some really dodgy video streaming sites. PiHole doesn't use the list Mauricio is talking about either and instead uses more "sane" lists.

A subscription is the easiest away around that if you want to support Geekzone.

@timbosan visitors can continue to use adblocks if they so desire. The main point here is that many times people install adblock software because of one specific site and that blocks all other sites they use - sometimes unintentionally. I think it's just fair that if we see someone using an adblock we should be allowed to notify these visitors - "hey, you are using an adblock, please consider whitelisting or subscribing".

We do not block features or do anything different.

And yet, even this kind of script is blocked - something that doesn't happen on other sites.

I don't know what list he maintains, but as someone who does extensively use an ad-blocker, I _hate_ "please white list us" notifications nearly as much as I hate ads, so I can understand why people would be blocking them.

As I mentioned some people install an adblocker without understanding is for every site they visit. As far as I understand, the "please white list us" is not against the adblock rules - changing content or blocking features is.
