Hi,

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to PDA's, smartphones, and what the current capabilities are. I have some requirements in mind and am wondering if a single device, or combination of devices currently exists which is capable of meeting my requirements. Would be grateful if some of you knowledgeable guys could comment.

Thanks,
Dredd.

1. Decent speed Internet access (GPRS/G3?)to enable PPTP VPN connection to customer firewalls, then run RDP/ICA thin client sessions to perform remote support, etc.

2. Ability to receive "pushed" email/new message notifications from a corporate email server, e.g. Exchange 2003.

3. Ability to view and modify shared/workgroup calendars on corporate email server, in real time if possible.

4. Bluetooth which works and is easy to configure/reliable!! Ability to be used by another device (e.g. laptop) as a 3G/GPRS/dial-up modem over bluetooth for general Internet access plus PPTP VPN and thin client as in point 1.

5. Easy and reliable connectivity for bluetooth headset (pref from same manufacturer so same charger can be used for device and headset).

6. Ability to "ActiveSync" with another device (e.g. laptop) over Bluetooth.

7. Ability to transfer files (e.g. MP3) to and from another device (e.g. laptop) over Bluetooth using simple explorer type interface.

8. GPS options.

It looks likeyou could use a Pocket PC Phone Edition. These have a data centric interface, including a touchscreen with QVGA resolution. They also incorporate GPRS or CDMA 1xRTT(some models CDMA EVDO) depending on what network and country you are.

Have a look in our review of the following devices/services:

  • i-mate PDA2k (GSM/GPRS, a.k.a. Vodafone VPA III, O2 XDA IIi, T-Mobile MDA III)
  • HP h6365/6315 (GSM/GPRS)
  • Audiovox PPC 5050 (CDMA 1xRTT/EVDO, a.k.a. Falcon)

  • GoToMyPC for remote access
  • LogMeIn for remote access

  • Always-on e-mail is an article where we show some of the e-mail tools available and how they work. Also, all the Pocket PC listed above are compatible with MS Exchange 2003 always up-to-date e-mail functionality.

The new Harrier (CDMA EVDO [3G]) is debuting at $999+gst cash and carry price. I think its the same as the "Blue Angel" GSM?

The Falcon is dropping to $699+ (from 1699). (Not 3G though)

Similar to Blue Angel (GSM/GPRS, a.k.a i-mate PDA2k), but the Harrier (CDMA version) does not have wireless LAN built-in. Otherwise an interesting device.

Yes, the lack of WiFi is the only thing that is keeping me from buying on. I dont want a WiFi SD card sticking out of it.

Finally Telecom has Bluetooth with this unit... thats a positive.

The Falcon cannot use EV-DO... ? The Falcon can access Telecom's 3G network with CDMA 1x capability only.

I dunno if this has been posted about before - but does anyone know much about these?

    http://www.lingo.co.nz/PADle.htm

    Perhaps this answers your question.

New Zealand made PDA/tablet running wince.net. With many of the T3G data cards and devices either failing tests or being delayed, maybe this could be the answer? Im sure Telecom could snap up a small kiwi outfit like this..

    Thoughts on the device?

It looks promising to me but I want to use one before I make a call

    its 3G time!

The Falcon Pocket PC could access CDMA EV-DO with some modifications. But I think TNZ will launch the Harrier for CDMA EV-DO and keep the Falcon for CDMA 1xRTT.

The PadLE is cool, but it's at least 100% bigger than a PDA. It's more a replacement for a Tablet PC than for a PDA.

Falcon - definitely not 3G. Just Mob Jetstream at up to 153k.

BTW - I have seen 151kbps on 027 with a Nokia 6225 and APT cable.... very impressive.

I have used (briefly) one of those PDAs - quite nice, but I dont need a middle size device.

    How much are they?

T3g card (singular) and Harrier have passed testing and are held up in the supply chain (i.e. packaging etc). Will all be shipping on the fourth.

Somewhere in the specifications it was quoted as CDMA EV-DO ready - meaning not delivered as EV-DO, but could be used with if an appropriate upgrade was installed. Have to ask at TNZ (talk to Gary, if you know him).
