Netnews has for years had the very useful concept of the killfile where you could add a user or users whose posts you didn't want to read and they wouldn't be displayed any more. Could this be added to GZ? Note that it's not stopping a user from posting, it's just removing the need to listen to them if they're polluting a forum.

"Ignore user" would be a nicer term. Not sure there's a lot of value personally, if someone enrages you that much maybe you're best off not using the internet.

They don't enrage me at all, but it's tiresome having to scroll past endless posts to a forum just to find the ones worth reading.

I support the concept of 'ignore user' - the term 'killfile' I think comes from Usenet reader clients (such as Forte Agent) which allowed the user to filter out posts from specific posters.  The point of this is to remove posts from your view - should not be anything to do with rage.

Something to consider- when you block someone like this, should it be a per-forum option (ie block on one but not another) or a universal (block on all forums) feature - or both?

Per-forum.

Readers of a particular forum on here will know what's being referred to :-).

You don't need to use Geekzone at all. I would rather not. Give me a reason.

This has already been discussed in the past: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=4&topicid=208983

And no, I don't think it should be implemented.

It's a feature that I use on another forum (Pprune, actually) which has vastly enhanced my UX
However, nobody on GZ has ever got close to me exercising a 'personal ban hammer'

So, I'd vote for 'not needed enough to be worth the effort'

Just my $0.02

GZ has some of the most pragmatic, professional and prompt forum moderation that I have experienced, and IMHO that sets the tone for what is and isn't acceptable. By and large, there's a high level of respect amongst users here, and on the odd occasion someone says something out of line, it's addressed and people move on.

I'm sure we all see posts and cringe or get irritated from time to time, but in my view, that diversity and difference of opinion is important. It would be pretty dull if everybody always agreed, and you never know, you might learn something valuable from those with a different opinion to your own; I know I have. It would be a shame to miss out on that by completely blocking those you disagree with.

Thank you for finding that thread for me.

I believe the OP asked more for reasons of his own sanity, similar to my intention when asking about avoiding user accounts in 2017. It certainly was not to create an echo chamber. My intention was more like Twitters mute than Reddit's Banning & muting.

Anyone that is a prat on here gets moved along so never really been a problem I have found.

Now other places like the old trademe board. Hell yeah, needs it for sure.

I'm probably biased because I'm fairly strongly anti censorship, but this is a terrible idea. GeekZone has a lot of diverse people, with diverse backgrounds, opinions and personalities.

There are plenty of people who I disagree with about things on GZ, but I'd rather be exposed to that than living in an echo chamber and only hearing what I want to hear.
