I usually keep the "Geekzone Live" feed on a tab in Firefox but am intrigued by the "NEW" label on some posts. Currently only the first two are labeled, the next is another 2 minutes older and nothing is more than 3 hours. Last night the whole page was "NEW"  covering over 4 hours.

Just interested if there is logic to when "NEW" is displayed.

It depends if you have hit the "Reset read flags" link or if you had logged out and logged in again.

Don't think I have ever reset the read flags. The "NEW" labels change during the day when I am logged in - mostly all day.

I think it may be new vs the last full page load of the live feed.

the forum marks my posts as read even if i haven't read them or clicked "Reset read flags" button.

its normally if i open the "new forum posts" page and go away for what ever reason. rather frustrating.

I regularly find posts flagged as unread when I have actually read them, or vice versa. I have never been able to detect any consistent pattern of behaviour around this.

It is all about the time of post and the time of your last login (or read reset).

I get this too. If I go to the main forum page (that lists all the forums) then I have to start looking through all of the forums within a few minutes. If I don't (eg I just leave the main forum page sitting there for 30 minutes or so) then I risk the chance of the site thinking I've read everything even though I haven't even gone into any of the forums.

Conversely, I can go through and read all the tagged new posts in the "New Forum Posts" link, refresh that page, and I'll the posts I've actually read, will still remain tagged as new.

I understand that it's "new posts since your last visit", but it would be quite neat if you could select "your unread posts" that was agnostic of your last visit date.

Likewise - didn't even know there was such an option - Used to wonder what the "New" tag was - but think I have just become blind to it now.

frustrates me to no end when that happens as you have to scroll through posts to find the new content.

i normally get distracted by kids or a work phone call.

another one on this is ive been using my laptop over the weekend and  "Reset read flags" when i finish browsing

Hop on my desktop this morning and click new posts and get 3 days of posts, go to the new post in a topic and i have to scroll through to find the new posts from when i was on this morning on the laptop.

Rather frustrating.

I used to get that all the time going between my home PC and work PC. I now log in and out of Geekzone every time I want to use it rather than have it keep me logged in, that seems to fix the problem.

Indeed.

In addition I find that I have to go through all of the forums that I'm interested in, opening each in a new tab, and then go through each of those forums and open up any message threads that I want to read in a new tab. Once I've worked my way through all the forums and opened all the threads that I want to read then I click the "Reset read flags" and can only then start reading the actual messages. If I don't do it this way, if instead I open one forum and then start reading the messages, then I find that by the time I get to the later forums with unread threads the website has marked those threads as already being read. I guess I'm just a slow reader (or get distracted by other things while I'm reading, such as work!)
