OK I am now a long time poster of Geekzone and I think it is a fantastic site that helps a lot of people.

I like the idea of supporting Geekzone but have always found (currently using XE) around $75NZD on the high side for me to spend on supporting the site. I know there are people that can and do have the available money to pay the $50USD to subscribe however I think there are a lot of people that would like to help out and support Geekzone but cannot/will not stump up that kind of money.

I have a couple of suggestions that I believe would result in the number of people supporting Geekzone to increase dramatically.

First off and I have asked suggested this before. Change the payment system to NZD. It seems ridiculous that we are paying USD for a subscription service to a NZ site run by a NZ person/business. Being at the wim of the exchange rate is a good way to put people off doing it.

Also personally I hate paypal. Is it not possible to setup a straight credit card system? I am not sure on the costs of doing it that way but I know a lot of people would be put off by it being paypal.

Introduce tiers of subscriptions with corresponding pricing.
Simple really like so many things in this world have Gold, Silver and Bronze subscriptions levels each with benefits that reflect the level and stated subscription level in the persons user info in posts.

Something like
(all amounts in NZD)

Bronze
Cost $30 per year or $3.00 per month
Benefits
Bronze subscription tag on user details in posts and knowledge that you are supporting the site.

Silver
Cost $55 per year or $5.50 per month
Benefits
Silver subscription tag on user details in posts
# Personal Tag under your name in the forums;
# Automatic approval for your Geekzone Blog;
# 50 MB of disk space for image storage (automatically resized for best use in our forums or on your Geekzone Blog)

Gold
Cost $75 per year or $7.50 per month
Benefits
Gold subscription tag on user details in posts
# Access to private forums;
# Personal Tag under your name in the forums;
# Automatic approval for your Geekzone Blog;
# 100 MB of disk space for image storage (automatically resized for best use in our forums or on your Geekzone Blog);
# Image gallery for use in your Geekzone Blog "Random Picture" feature;
# Advertising free option for browsing Geekzone;
# Up to ten private forum, with invite-only access that you manage for each individual forum

I am sure that if a system like that described above was introduced the result would be more financial support for Geekzone and freitasm who makes Geekzone a possiblitiy.

Keep up the good work!!

The supreme bean hasnt had time to reply yet but I do agree with the above....
Is it possible to pay via direct credit (online banking) because not all of us carry those plastic cards with the Visa logo on them.... :)

The main reason I've not thought about subscribing is I don't wish to sign up to paypal.

If direct credit was an option I'd seriously consider it.

I'd like to be able to get better RSS feeds for what I pay. Currently I get each feed item with just the topic title and a giant Google Ad banner, which I think is a bit insulting.

And I agree: exchange rates are a pain to deal with.

I can definitely agree that the only cost $75NZD is alittle steep for some of us, a subscription level may ease this.. and more payment options, and costings in NZD too.. This is a NZ company so lets keep it NZ!

Fair enough. It's just a pain to change to a NZD account. But I will do it later this week or next.

The $75 a year is $6.25 a month. The price of two coffee per month. For all the fast speeds in the world, with no ads, no sidebar in our forums pages. And cheaper than NBR. And more fun.

Here's the thing. It's cheap. $6.25 a month is not bad. Cheaper than some magazines - that come full of ads and you don't have the option of not having ads. But we don't have many subscribers. And I doubt reducing price would bring more subscribers.

Years ago I run another service and we did reduce price on request of users. We reduce the price to the same levels users asked for. And no one subscribed. Not even the ones who asked for the price reduction and dictated the price.

In the last year I've seen a few posts around here saying "TOO MANY ADS! I'd pay to have no ads". And when we point to the subscription page the answer was - in all cases - no I don't want to pay for a no ads option".

Oh yes, free subscription!

Seriously though, I am comfortable with the current price structure. We might even reduce a bit when converting to NZ$. But I doubt a lot more people would pay - whatever is the price we set - except if we set it to $0.00.

For those who pay now, as usual, a big thanks. There aren't many of you around, so I really think you are helping a lot.

xpd: Is it possible to pay via direct credit (online banking) because not all of us carry those plastic cards with the Visa logo on them.... :)

What a lack of initiative folks. Just fire a PM and ask for bank account details. Of course there would be only the year subscription option, otherwise it would be a lot of work to manually update accounts every month.

Nety: Also personally I hate paypal. Is it not possible to setup a straight credit card system? I am not sure on the costs of doing it that way but I know a lot of people would be put off by it being paypal.

All other card system charge a monthly fee plus a transaction fee. We don't have enough subscribers to pay for that.

Noviota: The main reason I've not thought about subscribing is I don't wish to sign up to paypal.

If direct credit was an option I'd seriously consider it.

You don't have to signup for Paypal. You can simply enter the credit card details in the payment page and pay - no need to create a Paypal account.

As for another payment system, see my previous reply.

Nety: Introduce tiers of subscriptions with corresponding pricing.

I rather not. It's not a large site and there's isn't much to "tier" things into. I feel that offering a no-ads option, with the possibility to reduce the size of forum pages even more by opt-out of the sidebar, and increase image upload storage is a good deal all around really.

I rather put the effort this change would require into finishing what I have planned for Trusted Users in the forum.

magu: I'd like to be able to get better RSS feeds for what I pay. Currently I get each feed item with just the topic title and a giant Google Ad banner, which I think is a bit insulting.

The RSS feeds are not part of the subscription deal, since the start.

Will do. Everyone helps.

I know the RSS feeds are not part of the subscription Mauricio, but I do believe you're wasting a medium there by having items like this show up in the feed:

I would be inclined to go to the website a lot more if I could get an idea of what the OP is talking about. Even when I wasn't a subscriber I hated the idea of opening feeds just to see a Google ad.

I just think that you could probably get more visitors to the forums by giving them a little bit more on the feeds to entice them. I would fall for that. (I do for other forums)

LOL. Blame on your friends. You have no idea of how many thread I and other moderators update every day with some people being lazy enough to write "HELP" in the subject - nothing else meaningful.

Yes, it sounds mean, but some people are lazy even when asking for help.

Boy do I know that feeling.

But it definitely would be awesome to get that tweak. (Or I might resort to Yahoo Pipes :P)

Couldn't let it go by, so until Mauricio gets the feed tweaked, here's a (an?) Yahoo! Pipe for the latest topics with their full first post: http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=kBxI7Tl33hGeyzYLiZCvVg&_render=rss
