Am I the only one being overly geeky and noticing that the GZ web server doesnt seem to have a NZDST patch, seems to be 1 hour out of sync IMHO....either that or I'm very very blind today...

e.g. this thread was posted around 2235pm

I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code

Well....profile setting was NZ, I've changed the TZ manually...but I'm kinda sure it used to be ok previously..

anyways here's hoping its fixed up.

It wouldn't be very geeky if we didn't have the right time on the server ;-)

As pointed out, we don't automatically update your profile to reflect DST, so you can change it there...

There is an elegant way to handle time localisation automatically which is used pretty commonly these days, you might be interested in it Mauricio.

1: When you store the post date/time you use the current UTC time instead of local server time, in sql the function is GETUTCDATE() instead of GETDATE() for example.

2: Then read the user's datetime offset from the browser with javascript and store it in a hidden input field. You can default to the offset for NZ (12 or 13) if required for non JS users.

3: When outputting the page html you read the offset from the hidden input and apply it to the the UTC time for each post.

It could easily be done with standard JS and classic asp.

Yes, I know how to do it, and discussed this with Phil before - he sent me that code. It's just that I rather not rely on the browser client to do something using a feature (Javascript) that can be disabled.

Just default to profile setting or local server time in the case that the user doesn't have js enabled?

Has to be better than every user having to edit their profile to change the timezone twice a year after DST changeovers to get the post times to not be 1hr out?

Agreed, this is silly. Most other forums do it automatically, as per this one that I spend a fair bit of time on:

In addition, you may set the appropriate option to allow for daylight savings time in your part of the world.

DST Correction Option: Automatically detect DST settings.

It is a much, much smaller and less complicated forum than Geekzone, so really, how hard can it be to fix this?
