I was just thinking of how GZ is really just a bunch of conversations.

As many of you know like on Gmail iPhone and other systems you can have a general topic but create sub topics by replying directly to someones comment with a quote...

I think that GZ could get some edge if you implemented a more user friendly AJAX approach where the conversation was updated dynamically. Great example was when Mauricio spoke of something I had just mentioned earlier. I do note your on mobile. But as the way of the new internet technologies a smooth transition would be cool.

And sometimes less is more, by the way it can take a lot of scrolling to see what people are talking about. One idea could be limit the size of posts kinda like facebook does and have a "see more" link.

Actually a lot of our usability changes are coming from facebook. it is the most used site and has brilliant examples of what to do and what not to.

Just a few thoughts...

Some good ones and a lot more we thought over the years. The problem is that we rely on search engines and AJAX is not friendly to search engines at all...

You could have 2 versions...

One that everybody sees like now and then when you login the magic happens...

That's called cloaking - and Google does not like people who does it...

To make it clear: if the page is not hidden from public view then you should not present one version to humans and one version to bots.

Google will penalise your domain, remove it from the results and you might never come back.

most websites that are big have private logins.. For example facebook, there is a heck of a lot of info that is only available once you login. I too have been paranoid about this kind of penalisation, however displaying information differently should not be a problem.

Maybe some SEO discussion on webmasterworld.com's google section could clear it up...

But I think displaying the same info but more usable shouldn't be an issue. for example if you had the ability to auto update a conversation would not result in this penalty.

and imagine if we could have the option to open the page with the most recent at the top...

Also imagine our advertising revenue plummeting...

really? but you have a lot of adverts at the top. you could always refresh the adverts eeach time the data was updated or that might be against the TOS.

I suppose its a hard job when GZ is not just a repository for information but it is an advertising/revernue generating engine too.

Most companies have ToS that are against automatic refresh - they should be "user initiated". Same for example for Google AJAX Search API - they must be user initiated and not automatically generated.

Hard to make money in the AJAX world.

okay here's an idea that you have though of....

GZ is about getting page views right? Well if you could make it easy for people to just leave the window open and switch when they may have a new message. I dont know about other people but I only really come back to a topic when I get an email.

What could happen is the info be displayed at the top of the page but then a message balloon or something could tell the user that there is a new message and when they click to view it will smoothly slides down to show the new content and a new advert.

Anyway I just think it would be nice to be able to leave the window open instead of always refreshing the page and would actually increase my page views as I would leave a tab open. And that would be a user action.

You could even do something simple like allow the title of the page to flash something like 'updated convo' or something so when you see that in the tab people will click to refresh...

you wouldn't get penalised, because there would still be the unlogged in version that everybody (humans and machines) can see.

But anyway, it sounds like adding extra complexity that overall isn't worth it.
