A small test, from a suggestion we gathered during the moderators' meeting in Wellington this weekend:

Geekzone Live

Just leave it open and you should see updates rolling...

Still playing with it. Suggestions? Ideas?

So it's just refreshing the page every X seconds? Could do something with AJAX to make it more aesthetically pleasing perhaps?

Errr. What you mean by "could do something with AJAX"?

Look at the code. It's AJAX. It's not refreshing the page. It's reloading the content of each DIV from separate sources.

Indeed. A very small piece of Javascript, loading updated information in the background. Nothing fancy, no XML parsing, just scrolling information...

Which is why I put a "?" at the end, as it was a question.

Looks really basic. I assume it's not finished?

Well since you're looking for suggestions: spruce it up with nice scrolling effects.

No, it's not finished. But it won't have many more features. It's just a simple small page to be loading in the background and always up-to-date. Nothing else.

A nice gliding effect as new items are added would be super.

Because news doesn't get updated very often, and i don't really use the friends thing much, i think these are not very useful.

But the forum posts is really helpful, i am forever refeshing the page on the actual geekzone site to update the forum posts.

Are you considering adding the forum post auto-refesh to the main site? - i think that would be really cool.

Overall i think they are good changes though.

Does anyone else use the friends thing often?

Anyway thats my 2 cents :)

Auto update of the latest posts on the main page would be awesome!

I personally don't use the friends part that often, but I assume others would and this would be helpful to them.

I am not planning to change our frontpage, just because of search engines. That's why I created this other page.

Note the news refresh rate is much slower than the forums and friends.

The thing about friends is that if you visit a specific forum you will see some people posting there too - by being friends you can then see when some discussion that interests both of you is updated...

Any chance of a notification number in the page title (like twitter when there is a new tweet) even if it is only for the forum posts?
