so i downloaded the newest IE9, and went ahead and added facebook and geekzone to the taskbar

the facebook icon looks great, but the geekzone one is seriously pixelated.  do you need a 'high definition' favicon image to get a nice looking one, or do you just need to upgrade the quality of the existing one?

Indeed, needs a bit of transparency too or it looks pretty bad on a dark background.

The Favicon - "Favourites Icon" - is _supposed to be_ 16x16 pixels.

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Favicon

A seperate icon is another thing alltogether.

LOL.

and we should still be designing all our webpages for 640x480 resolution too!

further down that page, under browser support, it says:

Additionally, such icon files can be either 16×16 or 32×32 pixels in size, and either 8-bit, 24-bit, or 32-bit in color depth[10] (note that GIF files have a limited, 256 color palette entries).

Most web browsers have since added support for the new W3C HTML recommendation.[11]

ICO file format can store multiple size images, pretty standard to include 16x16 and 32x32... becoming common to store larger sizes in there too like 48x48 for Windows 7.

However you still need to consider keeping the size of the favicon down to a reasonable level as it's a heavily requested resource.

Yes, good point - will put together a larger favicon.

Good developer rundown of new IE9 jumplists and favions can be found here for anyone else interested: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3723715/where-does-ie9-look-for-the-new-large-favicons

I'd like to highly recommend http://egressive.com/tutorial/creating-a-multi-resolution-favicon-including-transparency-with-the-gi... - i've just followed exactly this process for my own website. I found that link via Wikipedia and I know Dave Lane, so yeah, kudos to him for putting a useful tutorial online. :)

So why not only serve the newer favicon to IE 9, as it is my understanding that is the only one that actually needs it?

according to this chart - http://informationgift.com/ud/faviconic/ (linked from above wikipedia page) - there is much wider support for the higher res versions than just IE9...

I have a bookmark on my android phone to the mobile geekzone, and the icon used there is much higher than 16x16.  Is the android browser getting that icon from a different place?

We have updated the favicon. Not onbly it's five times smaller in file size now, it's a lot clearer in the taskbar.

Also, when using IE 9 you will be able to pin Geekzone to the taskbar and start some tasks directly from there.

We will work to provide notifications through icons and the jumplist on the taskbar as well, such as new forum posts and new PMs. This will be coming in the next few weeks.
