Well, I heard on the forums that Telecom has extended their 1gb data for $49 promotion
Any comments on that?
Strange thing about this TNZ promotion...
new accounts only coke?
i have one: ew telecom
yeah, why wont they let me have that plan on ppc?
It says in the promo page that it's for data cards. But in the T&C it says it's available for data cards, Harrier and Apache.
But when I asked about moving my account to this plan, TNZ told me not to.
same *d have thought
telecom wont let me have it either I saw the same thing
how do they explain that?
Why wouldn't they let you have that plan?
"Further terms - The use of Telecom Mobile Broadband cards for Voice over IP (VoIP) is excluded. The 1GB Promotion is also available on the following smartphones: Harrier, Apache, Treo 600, Treo 650 "
A lot of Vodafone's marketing gives the impression that their 1Gb offering is only available on their Mobile Connect card, but that's not the case.
Has Vodafone New Zealand followed Telecoms lead?
makes you think
why do Telecom seem to be pushing customers to VF?
There's a problem though... I have a "special plan" with Telecom, and sometimes I pay more than $49, but most times I pay less - but my limit is only 200MB.
So I am divided between moving or not.
my limit is 500mb but I pay through the nose
i would move if your paying more than $49 for 200MB
but vf is slow
Yes, but some months I don't pay anything at all.
I don't use that much.
makes my 10mb for 10$ look rediculous
I get no MB for $10
Can someone get the $49 VFNZ deal without buying the card?
Just signing up for the contract?
I think so
ill look at this tomorrow
I know someone with a VMC on a 15MB plan that probably would use this well.
that was my understanding MF
paying by the MB/GB or for a data cap is the most USELESS...
When HSDPA is launched, will it be possible to buy handsets supporting this technology, or will it be necessary to use it with a data card for the forseeable future?
I will talk to him to move plans.
I think if you don't get the card, the plan isn't a 24 month term or something...
For now it's only on data cards.
In the future you will have handsets
I will ask tomorrow in town.
Talkin about town....
You're right, Coke. I switched to the 1Gb special for this billing period, and intend to drop it at the end of the perid.
And I"m using a handset rather than a data card.
Does anyone here have problems with the new NZ Post post codes and companies in other countries, mainly couriers?
I have to admit that I haven't really become educated on this new post code thing.
I dont even use them
no problems yet MF
I am expecting a box for review, coming from Singapore. The guy called me to tell me "DHL says your address is out of area in New Zealand". I live a block from the Post Shop here in J'ville... And get DHL stuff every second day!
I told him my new Post Code and they couldn't find in the database, then I give the old one and they found and are happy to deliver.
* Blode has quit IRC (Quit: )
thats just weird
DHL should be delivering a box from MS later this month. I think from singapore
So using the new post code turns overseas couriers into a nightmare experience.

I am getting one of these babies for a review: http://www.chilisystems.com
It's not in the country yet, but they are looking for resellers.
* cokemaster sets mode: +v sbiddle
I'm looking for new products.. nt sure I could afford to stock the chili boxes though
what is it? i am using 80x25
The Chilibox. Saw it during the CES in Vegas this year, and the guy promised to send one... Now he confirmed and I have the AWB. Should be here Friday!
what sort of price are they?
The chilibox is a Linux ready-to-use box, with DHCP, NAT, EMAIL, server for home use.
It comes with wired and wireless interfaces.
I think it's something like S$1200.
still nice though
But you don't need a router or a firewall. The box does it all. Also works as a NAS for your home or small office network/
is it a modem too or..?
cable or dsl?
Barf, the thing is... how many people at home really go into installing software firewall and configuring NAT and DHCP devices? This box is for the first time user of Linux, unpack and use it ;)
maybe a bank loan and buy a few
freitasm: so is pfsense, its 100% web based
It doesn't matter, it's just a ethernet connection - you can plug the cable modem or DSL modem.
you don't need to be a hacker to use it ;)
oh so you need an external modem :(
But pfsense you have to download and install. We are talking about a consumer box here.
i'll make my own chilisystem then. it will be MUCH cheaper
the chilibox has a market here.. but to what extent?
Not everyone at home will know what to do: install Linux, download firewall, install, configure. And not everyone can build the whole thing.
freitasm: you havn't read that site have you? its a live-cd
all you need is a pc with 2 network cards
and a web browser
Yes, but the Chilibox is more than a firewall.
actually, i could use that
The geek level required for pfsense is a notch higher than the chilibox.
* JAMMAN2110 is now known as JAMMAN|BRB
be very interested in your review Mauricio
It's like buying a PVR or building a media centre PC. You will get better one making yourself probably. But not everyone can do it.
true, but i dont think you get $1200 worth of system with the chilibox
Did anyone see the Alienware ad for Warehouse Stationery in the Sunday Star Times last weekend? If so, can someone tell me why those machines are so expensive for their specs?
my benchmarks are all to whack though because im a Linux geek :)
* inane is gone, autoaway/10m (l!on)
Is there Alienware in NZ?
They had ads on TV too
Apparently there is now!
wharehouse stainary sell alienware now
Hmmmm. The Dell deal probably.
I might be able to get staff discount :P
Warehouse Stationery have never sold Dell. That's The Warehouse.
* JAMMAN|BRB is now known as JAMMAN2110
nothing flash with the warehouse alienware gear that I've sen so far
Hmm, and The Warehouse are switching over to IBM machines
Warehouse Stationery used to do Gateway, but that was a disaster.
have launched in oz as well
Do IBM still make consumer machines?
pretty cases and large prices
Lenovo is not owned by IBM though is it?
alienware are reasonable for what they do, they are targetted at the non-pc literate gamer
My understanding was that IBM sold their consumer PC division to Lenovo.
lenovo is IBM done by china isn't it?
like alasta said.. and sure it was a chinese company
Thanks, inane. I have heard the Alienware name mentioned many times but wasn't sure what they were all abot.
Lenovo is a Chinese maker, they bought the IBM PC division. They are independent.
They use the IBM distribution channels, but that's pretty much it.
they were allowed to use the IBM name for x years and are now using IBM/Lenovo and then Lenovo by itself

Wow, Alienware's site is quoting $2169 for a notebook with Pentium M 1.5GHz, 256Mb of RAM, no wireless and 40Gb hard drive. Not exactly great value.
So some will receive their USB memory keys tomorrow or after. Chris should receive the Treo case and laptop bag as well.
Hey freitasm I'll review the Linksys WIP300 if you can get your hands on one! :-)
Good one. I actually have a Netgear Skypephone Wi-Fi in the pipeline for next week, if you want to try.
You're the Skype expert..
lenovo are distributed by ingrammicro, same as IBM
ouch at that price
Linksys never replied to my emails. But Netgear was quick - in five minutes I got a reply from then in the USA, and next day someone here in NZ contacted me.
Shows their commitments
you have any luck with Logitech Mauricio?
I really HATE companies who don't reply e-mails: Logitech, D-Link, Linksys.
the new dlink wifi SIP phone look cool. just a pity it's made by dlink.
I'll take that as a no
freitasm tell me about it
Is D-Link kit no good?
Logitech? I contact the guys a couple of years ago, they sent me to this "contractor" in Aust, who simply replied to me saying "you are at the bottom of the pecking, so you will not have anything".
Do you want to hear the D-Link story?
oh thats nice
Yes, I'm curious.
logitech still haven't gotten back to me on my product enquries
would you like me to have a chat with the Logitech distie in NZ Mauricio?
Pity about Logitech. They make some cool products.
yeah Logitech great products shite CS
I used to send e-mails with Return Receipt. I sent an e-mail to their contact in Australia. I received 32 receipts, from 32 different people. No one replied. I then contact them in the USA, who forwarded to a guy in Sydney. The guy replied saying "It's not our policy to reply to e-mails we receive from the site".
So there you go. I never recommended d-link after this.
I love D-Link.. they make me money.. fixing their crap and selling replacement gear
That's pretty bad.
I use Logitech for mouse and keyboard (on the tablet PC), but MSFT on my desktop.
their routers are all crao
do a great nice big blog about it all ;)
I find microsoft are almost as bad at actually being helpful
By the way, someone at MSFT read my blog about the camera, and they are sending one of their new XV6000 1.3 megapixels next week for review.
have you guys heard the one about dlink using one NTP server in all their firmwares?
but they are very good at getting back to you
another reason not to support them
do you still want a logitech unit MF?
Yes, the poor one in Europe, they used without requesting authorisation...
hardcoded some guys NTP server into their firmware without asking and cost him big $$ for traffic
okay.. thought I'd ask
I returned two d-link wireless AP before and the Digital Media Player DSM320. They can't just make good products in my opinion.
was going to try nd get one sent to you
need to talk to the distie and was going to try my luck
The thing is, some companies thing we are all sucking them. In reality, if the product is good I would buy. But only with a good service.
big loss really
Ok, anyone else with good experiences?
Word of mouth is a powerful thing. I would have willingly bought a D-Link product until tonight.
yep! cameo wireless AP $75 better than a $300 apple airport
DSE are great to deal with.
ive never had a problem with DSE
* sbiddle says Vodafone are still no better.. http://www.vodafone.co.nz/promos/ shows the pay for 3 mins talk for 2 hours still!
some of there problems are a bit cheaply made and break after some 'excessive force' but thats all good
WLG-2003? i dont have it on front of me sorry
DSE gets a hard time, but I have had good service from them generally, although they seem to have a few staff who really don't care about their customers.
I suppose you get that in retail.
Actually, when I bought the d-link AP and returned it I had to wait for the Belkin to arrive. I went to DSE and bought the cheapest Wi-Fi AP, DSE branded. And it worked *REALLY* well on my TCL connection.
they get a lot of shit from customers too though
i know some employees
After a week I returned it to the store, but I thought the service and product was good, so instead of getting the money back I just got something else I needed.
some customers really will destroy your day and ruin it for the rest of their customers
Very true, Jamman
* inane-lookingatapplet has joined #geekzone
I was in a DSE store the other day with somebody complaining their 2.4ghz cordless phone interferred with their 2.4ghz video sender. He wanted DSE to give him a different freq phone for free because it was apparently their problem.
not sure sorry, all i know is it runs linux 2.4.20 (ucLinux) on a conexant ISL3893
some people dotn deserve shops
and you paid $75?
Yes, people tend to get frustrated with their own lack of technical knowledge and then take it out on the wrong people.
incl GST, yes
I worked in retail for long enough to know that.
nice applet by the way, very - not laggy
dragonpc here in chch

How's the weather in Christchurch, Barf? I will be down there on Friday.
that's why so cheap
I used to work for the distie..
Ok, this makes me think.... Since I will be getting the Microsoft LifeCam (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=6373), I can give this one I have away.
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a000d'
Type mismatch: 'cLng'
alasta: warmer.. 12C
Wellys weather is leaving a lot to be desired
Barf: That's not bad for a Christchurch winter.
more crap whether due in wgtn tomorrow
the lifecam is a nice looking unit
Yes, we were supposed to have a good week in Wellington.
So, tonight's prize is a Genius webcam....
wind warning just issues and heavy rain due tomorrow evening
* jama has joined #geekzone

Well done, sbiddle.
msg cokemaser oh no not jama :P or wait was it juha?
barf.. is the cameo unit stable?
MF: Just out of interest, how much does that camera retail for and is it reasonably good?
GZNeoTech: yes seems fine
GZNeoTech: hasn't locked up ever
unlike those damn Apple airports...
I think I bought it for $60. It's ok for MSN Messenger - I use it every time. I just don't think is hi-res enough for the Geekcam pictures.
cheers Barf.. the distie still gives me okay prices so might get one.. still not wireless here :(
wow not wireless
must be seen to keep the trouble-and strife happy Jama!
Ok, Sbiddle claimed his prize on a PM.
does anybody know how it's possible to connect a device to cafenet without using HTTP authentication to logon?
I want a wireless camera to place on top of the Roomba... But all Wi-Fi cameras need power, don't work on batteries.
Possibly, I've seen some Wi-Fi phones around connected to Cafenet
does it have to be wi-fi MF?
yeah that's what I was wondering - how you connect a phone that doesn't support http authentication
Hmmm. It would be something that connect to my network - so either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
* JAMMAN2110 is now known as JAMMAN|AFK
guy had hiw WIP300 connected at the MFC last week but I didn't think of asking at the time
I am sure there should be a way to arrange with Cafenet to have the MAC address whitelisted...
Just a thought.
freitasm: MACs can be faked
I know some people there, if you want.
* chiefie has joined #geekzone

[chiefie]: Chiefie in da house... All rise!!
Yes, I know.
a wireless 'security' camera could run on batteries, but then you'd need to capture via a tv card or other video captuer device
miss me? :D
Yes, see - a capture card on the PC. Why, if I already have a wireless network covering the house?
to overcome the battery problem?
sorry.. just a suggestion
I'll keep my eyes open
But the "mobile camera" on the room seems cool. For example, since there are Roomba API, I could have that activating the Roomba if a movement is detected, and follow the intruder to take a picture?
See where I am getting?
Probably nowhere :)
Do you have stairs?
Nope, all single plan
you're trying to auck up the intruder?
* JAMMAN|AFK is now known as JAMMAN
So cool. Left the Roomba by itself here today, went to the Shopping Centre and when I came back the floor was clean and the robot was docked, recharging... Nice!
sounds like a plan though
that happens here without a Roomba
Does it purrrr if you pat it?
wife goes to work.. when she gets home, the vacumming is done!
about 600 $ retail though??
Nope, but since we have wooden floors, it's a bit noisy.
does it get corners MF?
I paid $490, and HN put in a spare 3x filter bag.
I reckon a web interface would be cool..
I can't remember the last time I used a vac cleaner
Ill check the local HN then
You can get a web server on a chip
Yes, it has a small brush on the side that will get to corners.
Can you marry it?
imagine it eventually become R2D2
Or at least have a civil union with it?
Hmmm. I don't think
I assume we're talking about the Electrolux thingy here?
nope. it's the irobot's
not trilobite (which is electrolux)
That means adoption rights as well
The trilobite sounds nice - but expensive and no API.
It "learns" the room layout apparently. I am not sure how is the Roomba though. I have to read more on their site before hacking into it.
Ok, I better get moving now. Have a good night all!
* alasta has quit IRC (Quit: )
A Wifi camera here freitasm http://www.trademe.co.nz/Computers/Components/Other/auction-62405647.htm
excuse the typo
Probably only needs a 5V supply
Yep, this kind of stuff - but battery powered.
just hook a battery pack up
you can get 9V battery powered cams at DSE, you'd need a transmitter though
I would guess it would only draw around 600mA
maybe 1A if you can turn up TX power
I see some good hacking project coming up here.
im loving it
you should have a look at www.i-hacekd.com MF, im not sure if they have it on there but if they dont its coming
think CCTV supplier I get stuff from has some Grand 2.4Ghz stuff will see if they stock these
Good stuff. Will look at all this. Gosh, I need more time! Wednesday and Thursday in town this week. And I am coding some more stuff in the Geekzone Blogs.
the linksys wi-fi cam uses a power adapter.. so you could use a battery pack instead?
a lot of networking stuff all uses 5V these days
Some of you asked for this: dump/load blog contents (posts, comments) to XML files for backup, Ten Most Recent Comments, Ten Top Commented Posts...
Sounds good to me
Ok, so for the late comers, before we close the log for the hour chat... Geekzone 2006 is coming, and it will be in the last Saturday of September. We will arrange a cinema for that, and we have two speakers confirmed, plus Symantec and Microsoft in the cards (I will get a confirmation from them and post in the Geekzone 2006 blog later).
the linksys camera is $341 RRP :(
you can run most 5V stuff on 4xAA batteries, NiMh's give you 4.8v
are we going to video the show??
is this date set in concrete MF?
i can do thast??
Registrations will be essential, and we will try not to charge anyone! But we have limited seats (45 - 60 depending on theatre), so you will better register as soon as it is open.
The date have been arranged with the speakers, so it's pretty much confirmed.
freitasm: is this GZ conf in welly?
cheers MF.. all I need to sort out is accomodation
Yes, in Wellington, last Saturday of September.
when is the date for GZ06?
do we know when registration opens?
any carparks in wellington that let you sleep in the car?
ask Ben GZNeoTech ;)
ill be there hopefully
Yes, I will send an email to everyone in our mailing list. Last year we had people from out of Wellington, and people enjoyed a hotel in Cuba Street. I think everyone booked there.
And post in the blog.
GZNeoTech: i forget his last name, the famous homeless guy
Hmmm. Condensed Milk :) Sweeeeeeet
GZNeoTech: with his own wikipedia page
* chiefie would post a comment in blog but he can't for unknown reason.
what's his wikipedia page?
will have to drive down from Akl
'blanket man' ?
Thanks everyone... I am closing the log and will post in the forums soon. Please continue talking!
we can meet in hammy??
