So I've been hearing alot about this ADSL2+ technology that is (or being) intruduced throughout NewZealand.
Reportedly some people are already connecting with ADSL2+...
How is this done? Because when setting up with xNet I was told to put the DSL Modulation to G.dmt, are some people just trying ADSL2+ as their DSL Modulation mode and seeing if it connects or not?
In my Linksys WAG54GP2v2 I have many options for the Modulation type:
MultiMode
T1.413
G.dmt <-- What I was told to use.
G.lite
ADSL2
ADSL2+
ADSL2 ANNEX L
ADSL2 ANNEX M
ADSL2+ ANNEX M

Does anything else need to be done at the users end to try this, (i.e: xNet need to change my 'profile') ?
Is there any harm in doing this (will xNet get angry

)?

This pdf shows the current ADSL2 rollout, however I cannot find an exchange for the Tasman region (Nelson/Marlborough/etc), are we just to unimportant to have an exchange?

g.dmt is the ADSL1 standard, which is recommended to be used when you are in remote areas where line stability can be a problem or any other similar problem. You may try MultiMode, which automatically selects the profile, but sometimes that may not be the best choice.

You must be connected to some exchange somewhere, the ADSL2+ rollout page only covers the main sites. Also, many rural areas won't be able to receive any enhancement in speed and connection.

You can try ADSL2+. It will either work or it will fail. No one will get angry. I do not like multimode, long story.

This is ADSL2+ in laymen's terms: The "2" is the second generation and basically the exchange and the modem decide how laud to talk to each other instead of every modem screaming at full power. This means that there is less interference between lines and people get a more stable connection. The "+" is because they decided to double the number of signals sent down the cables because legislation changed and they are allowed to do it. But the extra signals do not travel as far down the lines as the base signals do so it only really benefits people close to the exchange (within about 2km to 3km cable length).

Well i must be on an adsl2+ exchange as my modem recently started reporting higher than 11000 for the download and 980 for the upload.

but i repeat the OP question do i need to tell xnet because i get no difference in actual throughput if i force adsl1 or 2

I am lucky because i have always got close to the theoretical max for adsl1 throughput but now my link to the exchange is operating faster i would have expected the throughput to go up.

the figures are so close when switching between 1 and 2 that i suspect something is capping the speed

What speed do you get with the XNet speed test, and which plan are you on? I was on River and got 3.5M/110k while my modem would sync at 9M/130k, but when I switched to Fusion I got 7.3M/900k with the 9M/960k sync. Apparently the download speed is limited by the slow upload speed, because it is slower to return acknowledge packets.

Remember that all that is changed is the hardware at this stage, DSLAM's swapped for ISAMS which actually have a little better line characteristics than the old DSLAMs but generally you are not going to see any major changes untill ADSL2 service is enabled.

Thanks all, I thought it would be something like that,

i am on flood i think its called full speed up and down and today i get 7.67 up and 797 down from the xnet speed test
with sync speeds of 11244 and 925

interesting today i just noticed i get the higher sync speeds no matter whether gdmt/adsl2+/Auto is selected on my netgear dg834g

When is the ADSL2 service likely to be enabled? I'm still on dial-up(!!) and am feeling rather tempted by going to Fusion as part of a Great Leap Forward (changing a few other things round home). And part of the temptation of Fusion is the FLS/FLS aspect. I'm hopeful that I'm under 2km from my exchange, and according to the telecom pdf my exchange is fully migrated.
