Got a letter last Friday with the following:

Important information regarding your package pricing

From the 1st of November we will be passing on a SKY Start Up price increase and also increase our phone line rental charge.

On the 1st of June this year, SKY increased it's [sic] price of SKY Start Up by $2.00. We have not passed this price increase on to customers for the past four months but will do so from 1st of November. At the same time we will be increasing our phone line rental charge by $1.00 per month.

As a PhoneLiner and TV customer, this means a total package price increase of $3.00 per month.

TelstraClear InHome still offers you a phone line that costs less than alternative suppliers, New Zealand's fastest home broadband, advanced TV services and mobile all on the one bill.

Note that I am in Wellington, so this may not apply to your region.

I got it too, and I think it is for all TCL Cable phoneline and digital tv subscribers.

Internet is my backyard...

So while other telecommunication companys are dropping the prices for thier products and improving their offerings, TelstraClear offer nothing new and increase thier prices!

They need to sack thier strategy manager.

That is correct. Just looking back at my SKY invoices, the subscription charge was increased by $2 back in June.

It's hardly their fault if Sky are increasing their prices. TCL simply have a distribution agreement with Sky.

I was more getting at the price increase for thier phoneline.

Anyway, TelstraClear will be just another telecom retailer shortly, as they are connecting their cables to Telecom exchanges so to be able to use Telecom infrastructure...

Whats amusing is all these companys planning to install thier equipment in Telecom exchanges, yet what they dont know is Telecom are planning to close all these exchanges in the near future, as they are almost empty, having been rendered obsolete because of roadside cabinets...

Hmmm, I don't think Telecom is rushing to put everyone on a cabinet... nearly 80% (according to The Herald) of the country is still directly conected to an exchange - cabinets are a way of extending your run without having to build an exchange. Put a repeater in every 3km or so, presto instant phone service. Too bad if DSL gets trolleyed on the way.

And TelstraClear has a LOT of infrastructure - more than anyone except Telecom - sunk in the ground, so I don't think they are about to become a Telecom shop just yet.

Connecting at an exchange is common telco practise - it's called INTERCONNECT!

Whilst a .03% price increase to $32.95 is a bit of a bumer, when weighed up against a Telecom line rental ($45+) it all seems
to be OK again.

(Just for the record Telecoms last price rise was over $2, and at the same time they pumped up their
money maker the Wiring maintanence by 24cents)

lets look at that shall we....

24 cents x 1.4million customers x 12 months =
24 x 1400000 x 12 = $4 032 000

not bad for 24 cents.

We were clearly not comparing the Telecom New Zealand pricing with the TelstraClear changes, so please back on topic.

OK, I'm not happy with the price rise either, But I do still think the overall package is good value.
