I'm thinking in this way, but I hoped that prices will be changed before Christmas. It's why I still with Xnet. I can wait few more weeks. Fibre Internet should be very fast (in theory), faster than Woosh. But now I'm very close to make decision and start using Woosh.

To Maverick: I understand that you can't change this, I don't blame your company, I just tired by slow Internet.

$99 per month is pretty good for a phone, free minutes to a number of international destinations, and 30Mbps/6Mbps speed. I pay about $75 per month and get 10Mbps/1Mbps. Can't wait until I can sign up to fibre, maybe if Telecom decide to light up the dark fibre running past my front door. The cable for our new house is within a meter of the fibre stub box, but instead a pipe needs to be installed across the footpath and up the pole for the copper to run across the road to the connection box that was run over by a truck some time ago and got water in it corroding the copper...

aren't the UFB prices that chorus will charge fixed? I know I saw $37.50 as a wholesale price for 30/10.

Is it then the case that you don't know when you will be switched over, rather than what the price will be.

This is the hold up, the current FTTH pilot will most likely reflect the UFB pricing and hence the delay as the supplier will not want to set one price for the current Service then another for UFB , When UFB pricing is finally set then we will be able to move forward with the new plans.

Correct, and my ADSL is also $75 + data. That is my point. You pay extra for the data you use, but for 25$ more than me (and other ADSL customers) you can get 3x the speed. Instead you chose to pay $20 less than me to get no speed, and then you complain you have no speed.

You can never have enough Volvos!

If you look at upload speed, it's ten times what ADSL customers get.

Either way, to compare apples with apples:

1) You are on the Fusion service, same as a lot of ADSL customers.
2) You pay the same price per MB for data as the ADSL customers.
3) You have the choice (which ADSL customers don't) of two speeds.
4) The slower speed is cheaper, and the faster speed is more expensive than ADSL.

Given the speed choice available to you, in some ways you are better off than ADSL customers. It's your money, you decide what is most important - paying the mortgage, or fast internet.

That aside, there is some confirmation from WxC staff that prices for ADSL are likely to be revised soon. Given what other ISPs have done over the past months, it is reasonable to assume that there will be some combination of more data or less money.

However, you are in a trial area of a new technology that (so far) there is only one company that has the skills and equipment to offer a connection. Trials frequently cost more, and are less flexible while bugs are ironed out (that's the nature of a trial). You've been given a reassurance from WxC staff in this public forum that they will review FTTH pricing structure as soon as the wholesale company that oversees the local infrastructure on which they depend has confirmed their new pricing.

Not really sure what else can be said here... but wait for that pricing confirmation before too long. If you believe you have been misled as to what comunication options were available to you in the subdivision, I suggest taking it up with the developer.

We had hoped to introduce new Xnet plans for both copper and fibre this month but have been forced to hold off due to the Commerce Commission’s recent DSL price determination. Unfortunately the result appears to have increased copper access costs to motivate customers to move to the fibre network as it comes available.

If you're not interested in reading the article, in a nutshell the Commerce Commission has increased the copper access costs in urban areas and everyone is working out the impact. Internet Service Providers that issued pricing prematurely to this determination may have to re-evaluate their offerings. For example Scott Bartlett from Orcon has referred to the determination as a body blow.

Now that all of this is out of the way our bean counters are back in business and we'll hopefully have our new plans ready early 2012.

I would love to get hold of the guy at Telecom that decided to can the fibre roll-out in Auckland about 7 years ago. I've got fibre, just can't connect to it, and Vector fibre which is a few hundred meter from my home is very costly. I hope Pakuranga again becomes a pilot area as with ADSL2+.

But even "connecting to copper" is becoming mostly fibre except for the last bit between home and the road cabinet.

So the outcome of this very long thread of frustrated customers is that likely XNet pricing will be similar but other ISPs will revise their pricing up since they were jumping the gun.

I would say you are paying too much, I pay $120.60 a month for 120GB. (That's $120.60 total including Data and Line Charges)

The data charge alone on that at $1.28 per GB with Xnet would be $153.6

Thank you for support. I still think that everybody should have more options, not only extremely slow and cheap and extremely fast and expensive. There should be options available in between.

That is one way of interpreting it that leaves off the flip side of the impact. The other, more correct, way is that the comcom have averaged the price so that whilst urban customers will cost more than they did before, rural customers will cost considerably less.
