Rickles:

@dafman ... did they mention anything about removing the 'old' HFC cabling?

In Waikanae beach the cabling is underground in most places,

It was one of the places that the original Kiwi Cable/Saturn poured investor capital into....  One inherited it after Vodafone took over Telstra Clear in the 2010s

I'm guessing they will leave the cable entry boxes attached to houses as an exercise for the home owner to solve...

Also ... advertising for Everyday Fibre includes a telephone option.  But the Deco X50 has no provision for RJ11, so how does one get the 'landline' operating?

The x53 would be what you'd have to use or an old ultra hub ;)

Our Waikanae Beach cable is overhead. I'll be pleased to see it go, but suspect the street Tui wont be impressed.

Still no news on Pegasus?

I looked a few days ago.

I doubt anything will be changing at pegasus.
Enable dont have much fiber there.
Chorus doesnt even have anything going in off the state highway.

If vodafone wanted to shut down the HFC there, they would need to first convince Enable to roll out more, or they would need to put in a few cell towers.

I would bet that adding more cell towers will not go down well with the homeowners association.

In other parts I can see the network as being not very profitable, but in Pegasus I think it would be quite profitable.

Didn't someone before say One NZ already trialed FttH ?

But would it need to be split off as "EonLFC"?

Nearby in Mandeville "Amuri net" do the fibre connections but is listed as "Enable" on Broadband Map. So does that mean it's Enable network and they contract Amuri's technicians to do the support and installs? Could be a similar arrangement in Pegasus due to requirement for retail/wholesale split. Everything is wholesale these days, no separate binders like was for Telecom / TelstraClear / FX.

@raytaylor I take it you mean OneNZ would need to deploy more towers? Vodafone does not operate in New Zealand anymore

I was under the impression Ray that they were closing down the entire cable network, including at Pegasus.

Hence why I ask what's going to happen for the residents there - as you rightly point out, there isn't much of a fibre footprint in the township.

Yeah until they actually announce anything, i expect Pegasus will remain operating.

I would also think that since Pegasus is a reasonably new subdivision, most of the coax will be ducted so it would be pretty simple to overbuild fiber using those ducts if a deal was done with enable.

Pretty much all of the HFC network is ducted fortunately, even up to the house. I remember when they upgraded from the old Kiwi Cable network to the HFC network. Properties that were connected to Kiwi Cable had direct buried coax, and this was replaced by ducted runs with coax and twisted pairs (for phone). They used a mix of white PVC and black flexible duct (alkathene?) depending on the run. They quite often used a 'mole' - a pneumatic borer - to run the duct without trenching in Kapiti.

For Pegasus - closing down the network elsewhere presumably frees up a lot of spares that can be used to keep Pegasus limping along for longer.

Was meaning to post we noticed a For Sale sign by the big Satellite dish when going past but wasn’t 100% sure if it was for the building I thought they filmed some of Avatar in or the old Cable headend building

Edit: Just saw the bit about One NZ continuing a 5 year lease of the complex, I assume it’ll just be a on-prem Data Centre for them?

I don't have a crystal ball but if I had to place a bet it would be this.

Vodafone/One will turn off the HFC network and the residents who are not on UFB will complain like there is no tomorrow but few will be prepared to pay for it.

As things stand right now there are only 2 'official' ways to get UFB. Either be in, or buy into, an area where the government or developer paid for the rollout -or- pay for it yourself.

There is no incentive here for VF to keep the HFC network switched on.
