Teeps: The minute I see that they are doing this again I will be on the phone to them insisting I am not included and insisting my speeds aren't affected

They won't be able to accommodate you. The non-metering is applied to the entire customer-base of, what - a couple of hundred thousand customers? Global changes like that can only be applied to everyone or no-one.

You got my request in one. If they can't guarantee that service will not be affected they should not be offering silly things like free data weekends.

As you can see, it's handing over to Telstra's international division (Reach) in Lax at hop 10.

We already know that the Reach capacity is saturated and generating packet loss.

So that test isn't showing you a link test from where you are to Wellington, it's showing you a whole bunch of issues.

You really should use Telstra's own speed tests to tell you what the link speed is into the city - http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/customer%2Dzone/speedtest/

Oh absolutely, I know it's the international that's the issue - I was merely adding my voice to the people with issues!

I am happy enough with regular browsing and anything local - just a shame nothing I want to do is local!

Even Steam is REALLY slow, though everything I need is not on the TC server - which makes you wonder what the point is in having a 'complete' Steam catalogue when it's not, but that's a WHOLE other story, and not one for this thread...!

I genuinely don't believe them to be stupid, but I have a feeling that there has been immense naivety within the decision-makers there.

I said it in another thread, but gaming is extremely difficult...

If TCL marketers want to do this they should ensure they have paid for enough international band width...this is just crazy and must almost go against some consumer type laws as TCL have done this deliberately knowing they will affect a lot of their customer detrimentally

Gives a much more respectable result, but still not good, and I still can't stream internet radio, even at 24kbps!

Watching the ball move it does it in fits and starts, slowing to an almost halt then quickly moving again!

Last Result:
Download Speed: 1499 kbps (187.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2159 kbps (269.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 12 ms

ya, it's all kinda interesting to observe.  www.citylink.co.nz is local of course.  The server is even in Wellington, it's not in .us.

If you go to www.bowenvale.co.nz you'll find it is on a server physically in the US.  So the only way you can get that traffic on any day is via an international link.

But www.citylink.co.nz is on a server in Wellington.

That's where it should be for you. ~5ms away.

It's like the Massy.ac.nz discussion last week, which is announced in Sydney.

Telstra just refused to peer in New Zealand, so they end up picking up wads of local content over their international links, so they really can't do these sorts of free weekend things in my view because they just don't have the arrangements in place to use move traffic sensibly.

On cable in Kelburn, Wellington, speeds are much lower than normal but not unusably so. Latency is more of a problem, and it's pretty inconsistent. Some international destinations are 300ms round-trip instead of 200, but a few others are over a second instead of the usual 300-350ms. I'm not really sure what distinguishes one lot from the other, but there's a lot of fluctuation too. Also a fair bit of packet loss, of the order of 2-4% intermittently, so it's noticeable but not an utter disaster. Domestic traffic is pretty similar but shows the round-trip fluctuations much more, in part just because they're proportionally bigger - the range is 35-95ms, with the low end of that about what it usually takes and the average now about 45.

A couple of times I've had particular sites be completely unreachable, including Telstra's own, but they've come back fairly quickly and I can't rule out that they were just down themselves at the time. We haven't had any issues with the TV.

No. Tv is unaffected by Internet.

I don't think they've been naive. They would have considered the implications of what they were doing if they were like any other corporate environment I've worked within. And the techs would have been pretty clear about the effects. If they didn't consider the obvious consequences then they're not naive, they're stupid.

The competitive environment is changing and they will be looking at how they respond. TCL have already been dropping prices on the higher capped plans. A new uncapped plan is appearing each month with more competitive prices and/or better performance. How will they respond? What is the impact of introducting uncapped plans.

This weekend has been a good opportunity to stress test their network. There will be some cost in lost revenue and lost customers but the performance data must be invaluable for planning further moves. Maybe that's why they haven't bought extra international bandwidth, so they could see what happens with what they've got.

This has been discussed before. Basically some smaller ISPs were peering with Telecom and TelstraClear, then creating a tunnel and having their traffic carried for free from Aucklad to Wellington, or Christchurch to Auckland and so on.

The large carriers got tired of this freeloading. They offer peering, but it's not free.

Now, if you want to continue this discussion, start other thread. This is not the topic for it.

its not only affecting Telstra, i had to ring snap today cos i found speeds poor and they suggested that there maybe a huge congestion at some of the gateways e.g Auckland to international

youtube is also slow for people in new zealand.
