Has anybody tried a TelstraClear SIM in a Voda 3G phone? Does the wholesale agreement cover the 3G network as well as GSM?

interesting point, i don't have access to a tc SIM.

Taniwha, I see you have made the leap, I agree with your comments about the novelty factor of video calling.
Personally its a little overrated, I find it needs a quiet background and in addition good lighting (tried it in the car with the interior light and it was miserable) Its more of a private than a public thing too.

wireless data is great, I'm in thorndon just 3g'n it away on the laptop. I have been making great use of it. I personally think it is the best application available on the 3G network

In the choice between downloads and streams, downloads win everytime and produce much better quality compared to the streams, all at the sacrifice of memory. I have also found that keeping as much free onboard memory as possible is beneficial so purchasing larger external memory cards are a good idea and using them for storage.

Jama: Chris021 - the web browsing experience between Voda 3G and T3G is very different. Voda use a compression/cahce server that lowers the image quality and reduces the content size.

Jama, i was using an APN that does not go via the compression server. i.e. no proxy. also i was using my nokia handset via USB and not the data card. The handset does not apear to go to sleep.

Chris.

I got a call from Vodafone customer services. They wanted to know how I was enjoying using the 3g services how I rated video calling (3 out of 5). Suggestions on data plans etc. I have only once been rung by them (out of the blue that is) and that was when I first joined Bellsouth. Was intresting, she said they were working hard to improve coverage blah blah. Said they have had issues with downloads on 3g (like music videos from Vodafone live) and hoped it would be fixed soon. She sounded nice tho. Then she offered to video call me back. Sure sounds good. Was pleasantly surprised she even looked good (you never know what they look like lol). Should call her back ask her for a date...withheld number… bugger!

handset does go to sleep, however i find handover leads to 3-5 second delays in coming to life but thats the price you pay. in 3g coverage areas no qualms though

If many of you think the video calling might be a bit limited in use, what abou the 'look what I can see' angle, where you hold up the camera to show someone what you are looking at?

Do you see this having much personal or business use?

Yes, I think that has great applications, say, a live video feed for a rural doctor who needs help on a diagnosis, or someone working out and about on a job who requires some expert knowledge on a job (no guesswork in the description - "cut the blue wire on the left to disarm this bomb" type thing )

Chris 021 - leave your phone for about 30 seconds to go dormant then send a ping like this:
ping -n 1 -w 20000 x.x.x.x [ip number of vodafone.net or something]

Then see what the delay is. I do this on my 3GSM PC Card and it is 4500ms

We could already do that - take a video clip and send it by MMS.
Actaully, MMS-ed video works better than holding open a call and the wait for the action to happen. - and you get to review the clip before deciding to send it.
