I sure am...

i had worse trouble setting up phone + sky + broadband a year ago though, with a certain telco... (for those playing at home i am not talking about WxC).

The service is shaping up to be worthwhile. I might have to go and buy a QoS router to get the best results (although without it, its still working fine)

tonyhughes: Technical people can be picky (like me)

Yes indeed!  Mere mortals don't seem to understand that do they?

Like the guy who built me a barn and thought I was being picky because I wanted all 3 doors to be of the same brand with each of their door locks of the same type and in a similar position!!!

Sorry for getting off topic but this is a trait deeply ingrained in many Geekzoners and prospective suppliers to said Geekzoners ignore it at their peril...

I have to give props to WxC here for subsidising units and then allowing customers to unlock them. Compare and contrast with Vonage in the USA. It doesn't actually make much business sense to me other than reducing the customer whinging, but I'm not complaining :-)

A reduction in the cost of VoIP units benefits all NZ Geekzone readers in very tangible way.

On another note, I'd actually prefer a provider who locks down units like this. It means I can get through to the helpdesk more easily as there are less "I just changed the codec to G.722 and it stopped working" calls and that there are less scriptkiddies hacking on the service. If you want to host your own PBX then you can pay a little more for the priviledge methinks.

Well done.

i must be old cause i dont know what giving props means :(

The VFX service is pretty cool. The portal is not the prettiest thig around, but its functional, and lots of configuration options. Stuff that you would normally have to pay a telco seperately for, and call a helpdesk to get provisioned or changed or removed.

The voicemail structure looks reasonably good, and I will have a play with that some time.

The number range is different than anything I have seen in town before...  its 06 824xxxx (Napier is normally 835 or 834), but thats cool. It will actually be great from a geek point of view to give the number out and strike up a conversation when people ask "why the strange number".

We have call minder which costs around $10 a month, so I guess we will can that, and put call diversion on the Telecom line to point to the VFX line - its a local call, so no per minute charges, and now my Telecom number will follow my VFX number, wherever it gets pointed at the time. Call diversion is $3 a month, so by April I will have saved $45 in monthly charges, and even once they start charging $11.95 a month,  ill only be paying a net total of about $5 more a month for all that extra functionality.

Once Naked DSL arrives next year, you could ditch your landline completely as presumably most of your callers would have caught up with your new number by then.  If you wish, you can also pay Telecom Directories to list your VFX number for about $20 per year.

It sure beats forking out $42 every month + $10 for call minder etc, etc.  I've also found that having Caller ID on my "landline" is very handy and several people have been surprised when I greeted them by name.  And as you say, the unusual number is always a talking point Smile.

Hi guys,
You have got me intrigued - I got lost with a lot of the techo babble so wonder if anyone can tell me is it possible to utilise the VFX number, current Telecom number with Freedom plan to my mobile?

Cheers

Extremely unlikely.  VFX is not a service provided by Telecom, so if WorldxChange were to allow you to call your Telecom Mobile as much as you want for $10 per month, they would be losing money as they have to pay Telecom a termination charge (20c or more per minute I believe) for connecting the call to your mobile.

After 50 minutes of calling, WorldxChange would be losing money so I very much doubt they will offer this service.

Have any of you tried VFX on Xtra Go Large? I'm interested to know how it'd perform - I'm currently on Xnet, but am wanting to switch to Go Large. Many thanks.

So can the DSE locked units be unlocked with a factory reset out of the box so both lines can be configured or is the line 1 provisioning still set to the VFX server after a reset? Does reflashing the firmware remove this limitation?

the dse unit at any stage can be totally reset to factory settings (no carrier settings), by plugging into line 1 and pressing ****RESET#
This is before, during, or after use with VFX (though if you have VFX setup, this will stop VFX from working, unless you let them do a remote reflash).

If you use say, VFX for line one, you can ask for a reflash to release line2, then once line2 is unlocked there is a setting on the box to disallow remote reflashes, so VFX couldnt change any settings on you (though this could degrade your service if they *require* changes on your end).

Number portability should be all go by then too, so in theory you can transfer your Telecom number to VFX, or even (if you can handle the huge expense lol) pay $23.90 a month for two VFX lines.

I believe a second line is only $7.95 a month...

Thanks

I want to get one this weekend to set up a friend as an extension on my Asterisk PBX and buying a unit from DSE is obviously the easiest & cheapest way to get a unit..not to mention the fact they are virtually unobtainable anywhere else and the Ingram wholesale price with courier is more than the DSE retail!

It's good to see VFX haven't gone as far as customising the devices with their own firmware which is what many VoIP providers are doing overseas so your unit is useless if you leave their service.
