You can always get a Semble-ready SIM and test it yourself.

mattbush: Its rather pathetic....firstly cause its android only .

I'm not sure whether that's supposed to be a joke or a serious comment.. It's pretty hard to a) have Apple support when Apple don't let developers access their NFC, and b) Windows Phone doesn't support the SIM Alliance API which has become the defacto standard for SWP integration.

Sembles uses what is right now the best technology solution for a mass market deployment. HCE will overtake UICC based SE/SWP eventually. If other vendors aren't willing to support what is as close as the industry has to a global standard for NFC, then you can't blame Semble.

sbiddle:b) Windows Phone doesn't support the SIM Alliance API which has become the defacto standard for SWP integration.

Current WindowsPhone 8.1 does have an exact equivalent of SIM Alliance API and works in the same manner, see MSDN Windows.Devices.SmartCard.

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/windows.devices.smartcards.aspx

While on the topic, BlackBerry 10 also has an equivalent native API, see nfc/nfc_se_access.h

http://developer.blackberry.com/native/reference/core/com.qnx.doc.nfc.lib_ref/topic/manual/nfclib_nfc_se_access.h_functions_overview.html

The fact that the APIs don't have the exact same names as SIM Alliance API is a trivial difference compared to the apps being written in C# and C++ respectively, to a completely different application model and UI.

On a side note, HCE is promised for WindowsPhone 10, and BlackBerry has had HCE since OS version 7.

mattbush: Its rather pathetic....firstly cause its android only and secondly cause its only 2 banks. It will get swallowed up by a more global alternative sooner or later..hopefully sooner.

I kind of agree with you - though not because of the reasoning-deficient assertion that it will fail because "its (sic) android only". With Android phone handsets making up over 80% of all handsets sold, it makes sense to target Android if you're going for only one platform. Regardless of that though, it's clear that the main reason it's not also on Apple is because the Jobsians lock everything down and mere mortals cannot code against their NFC API (yet??). As for Windows Phone, well, there just isn't the market share there.

No, the real reason I agree with you is that I find it ridiculous that the carriers are locking it down to certain handsets, and only ones they've provided at that. Not only that, but they are the more expensive ones. I wouldn't be surprised if before long you have to have an on-account plan with them, and then it'll change to be a "premium" plan, etc., etc. I also (strongly) dislike the fact that I have to go in and get a replacement SIM card. Maybe HCE isn't a good solution, I'm not an expert, but I'd certainly prefer not to have to stand in line at a Vodafone store for an hour and a half waiting for the one staff member to complete someone elses long and drawn out on-account signup, or to put a screen protector on granny's new phone, just to replace my current sim with a new one. And what about better bank support?? Only two banks in it? No ANZ, no Westpac, no Kiwibank...that's the majority of NZer's automatically ruled out then. Let me be clear: people are NOT going to switch banks to use this service. Nor would they switch carriers, and likely that's why they signed all 3 of them up. So why not try really, REALLY hard to get more banks on board? I mean, if you can't get enough bank support, then the service, and therefore Semble itself, is never going to be a viable business.

Also, whether Semble see it this way or not, it's clear that from the carrier's point of view this is just another chance to try and push people into paying them more money. And when you consider that for most, it's going to be a tough sell to replace the use of a lightweight, already-conventional, credit or debit card with a phone anyway, there's really no incentive to try this thing out.

So to my mind, it's the barriers to adoption that they've thrown up here that are the real things that will kill it.

I equate this to Neon and Lightbox - piecemeal device support and a tenuous (at best) value proposition compared to the alternatives mean they are/will struggle to gain traction before a big overseas player (i.e. Netflix) comes in and does it properly. Same here, except there isn't any big overseas player yet. You can bet there will be though, it's just a matter of time.

It's a shame really, as who knows? Done right, Semble themselves could have been the established player with a great product, that turned up and shook the market up in OVERSEAS countries. If only they'd done a better job of encouraging adoption in their market of origin.

Vodafone offers this on their cheaper handset Smart 4 - prices range are from $129 to $699 so I don't think it's a price problem.

Smart 4 Turbo only - and that's a lock-in handset. Buy that and you're stuck with Vodafone so that's the concession for the cheap price. It's the exception that proves the price rule... :D

Unlocking is $30 or free after 9 months. http://www.vodafone.co.nz/help/mobile-phones/unlock/

That's $129/$159 for a 4G, 1.2GHz quad core processor, NFC, 5MP camera, HD Voice, 4.5" screen phone. That's a lot of technology for those dollars. And now it can be your mobile wallet too. :)

Lol.  And are you able to provide stats on how many people DO unlock those phones? Lets be honest - they're NOT there as an accessible way for people to get a decent smartphone when they can't afford a top end one. They're there to "lock" (and I use that word deliberately, since that's the terminology that is used - I realise it's possible, for a fee, to have it unlocked) in customers to Vodafone with the lure of a cheap, reasonably capable handset.

So....Semble offers a solution to only a small percentage of credit card users? ....You need to be android, You need to be with certain carriers, You need to have certain phones, and You need to be with 2 of the banks. And then to top it off you need to buy a new Sim...just to use a credit card in a different way?

and

The other 2 big banks will be offering something similar..but different....still pathetic

I will stick to my opinion....its pathetic.

I would hardly say Android users are a small percentage of credit card users.  You sound like a sore  iFan that didn't get it first  like usual..

Every new piece of technology is limited in some way, be it by price, availability, or something else. If everyone stuck with this argument then very little would get released.

As for difficulty in getting this up and running. 5 minutes at my local Vodafone shop got me a new sim card, and then about 5 minutes setting up the app with my credit card. Now I just need to find somewhere to use it.

Interesting that you managed to conclude that. To me his gripe was more that by only signing up two banks, they are targeting only a small percentage of credit card holders...nothing to do with Android vs Apple at that point...

I still don't think it's a big deal. It's one device, locked. Big deal. It's locked because people get some good hardware for a good price - competitors don't offer that, so deal with it.
