More a question for Sky than Vodafone staff I guess but once our billing moves to Sky and we essentially become Sky customers directly it would be great if we could then get access to Sky Go and in particular Bein Sports Connect which direct Sky Sport customers have access to. It's been a frustration of mine not being able to use the Bein app despite paying the same for Sky Sport.

sub3: There is certainly software out there that can be used for this purpose. The NextPVR software I've developed (here in NZ) is a good example. Below I've recorded a quick video for you guys to show you a NextPVR client running on an Android device. NextPVR aims to be super simple to drive, and the client acts very much like an advanced set top box.

NextPVR is a whole home DVR, so you can have a client running on each TV in the house, and they can all share the same content. ie, watch half a movie in the lounge, then resume it in the bedroom later etc.

For this demo, I'm on a small $40 android device. I've got a NextPVR server running on Synology NAS on my network. It's pointing at the Matt Huisman M3U streams, giving it the New Zealand IPTV channels.

Apologies for the crappy video, but watch it through and you should get the general idea for what NextPVR is about.

I was motivated by @sub3 to give NextPVR a go. That looked very promising and I've now integrated it with Serviio to produce a nice solution. If it keeps working well then we should be set for September.
A system like mine requires a dedicated server. Mine is Linux. Both NextPVR and Serviio run on Windows, so it should be doable there too. Message me if you'd like advice on my Linux setup - spoiler alert, you need good Linux knowledge. I'll write some documentation on it before September!
My previous adventures in this space were two years ago.

Look forward to reading this - I've been trying to get NextPVR to play nice with two AppleTV's. NextPVR seems like the nicest solution, however I'm having issues with through put.

Currently I am using MJH's TVNZ streams, being pulled into a TV HeadEnd, then onto NextPVR (because I cannot get the NextPVR to feed a stable stream to the AppleTV's).

This is on a dedicated linux machine (I think it's a 4th gen intel, i5 with about 16 GBs of ram).

If I run the streams without going through TV Head End first, any stream that seems higher than 576i gets "choppy", and I get no sound at all on Al Jazeera. Maori TV also seemed pretty unstable for a stream.

I've given up on this project for now - but I plan to come back to it before september.

(Note, from a PC as a client in a web browser, so far everything works as it should.

For those of you using MJH's feeds - what is the quality of TV2 like? I am only getting 480x270. Looks absolute cr*p on a 55"4K TV. I am using the NZAU feed and it was setup ages ago. If others are getting better resolution at least I know I need to check all my settings again.

Matts "feeds" are whatever the channel themselves provide. Something is wrong though if you are only seeing such a low res on TVNZ 2. What player are you using?

I have the feeds coming in via Emby.

I am using the following

http://i.mjh.nz/nzau/raw-tv.m3u8

At least I know there is an issue - so I will wipe this setup and add again and do more tests again around the correct m3u8 feed - as mentioned - I did  set this up ages ago.

Thanks

John

@sansom

Could we have the multicast UDP TV streams back on Vodafone? That would be a great solution to continue delivering those Freeview Channels over the current system.

I don't care about the kaltura stuff, if possible  redirect the current playpath to UDP multicasts of Freeview streams.

Like the previous setup

udp://@233.18.160.1:5501 Vodafone demo promo
udp://@233.18.160.71:5571 Duke
udp://@233.18.160.28:5528 Hope channel [9028]
udp://@233.18.160.127:5627 Prime HD_NEW [9127]

and being UDP people can use them in whatever player they prefer

Found the issue - for anyone else using Emby - It uses the lowest quality feed. Bugger. Off to work out another solution.

Hi wazzageek. I suspect I know what is happening, and responded to your post on the NextPVR forums with a couple thoughts and things to try.

sansom:

We have followed up on this idea, however the news is not good.  Quoting the (blunt) response from the manufacturer:  "I'm sorry but products are fully secured and not rooted. There is no way to reflash device for any other purpose"

Climate change is going to have a much bigger impact on our economy than Covid-19! (Example of many references.)
I think of then when I push a button on the VTV remote and Bluetooth takes my request to the box. Lovely hardware, but Vodafone is going to cause the generation of more carbon in the process of recycling the bits. The majority of customers will go off and reward other suppliers for the damage they have done to the environment creating more gadgets. That damage is a social cost which the whole planet is seeing the consequences.

I'm not blaming Vodafone NZ for this, or even the manufacturer. IMHO it is a blight on our first-world society in general, and tech sector in particular.

That was a very brief rant (I think). On a practical note, can the VFV remote be repurposed for anything, or is it too using a proprietary protocol?

For what it's worth @sansom, if the VFV box lost live channels, recording, etc, but kept running the current apps (with updates) and you could add DLNA, then I'd be very happy to forgo Vodafone's compensation payment and keep using it.

Dlna is / was being phased out of most modern tv's. I think the latest firmware on my SONY dropped support for it. Most likely its a security issue now. As for not being to reflash their "secure " stb its quite likely that there are tools out there for the sagem chipset that can do it, finding them however is a entirely different matter.

Thanks for that update. IMHO the 'security' being protected only involves Sony et al profits. This is the same reason our circa 2012 TV didn't have an analogue sound output.
Also very like my efforts to find service information for an Electrolux washer/dryer. Even the local agents couldn't get details they needed. LG washing machines seem to be much easier to get information about.

More waste, much of which will be buried in a landfill somewhere. Madness.
