Pretty sure Android 5 is being pushed (or about to this/next month) out to the S5/Note4/Note3/S4, so that takes them out of compatibility as well. Leaves about 4 models that will work lol!

It is only day one tho...

The compatibility will be updated for Lollipop as it is released for each supported device.

That's $129/$159 for a 4G, 1.2GHz quad core processor, NFC, 5MP camera, HD Voice, 4.5" screen phone. That's a lot of technology for those dollars. And now it can be your mobile wallet too. :)

Lol. And are you able to provide stats on how many people DO unlock those phones? Lets be honest - they're NOT there as an accessible way for people to get a decent smartphone when they can't afford a top end one. They're there to "lock" (and I use that word deliberately, since that's the terminology that is used - I realise it's possible, for a fee, to have it unlocked) in customers to Vodafone with the lure of a cheap, reasonably capable handset.

I still don't think it's a big deal. It's one device, locked. Big deal. It's locked because people get some good hardware for a good price - competitors don't offer that, so deal with it.

Absolutely, I completely agree with you, it's a good idea from Vodafone, and their "Smart" phone series provides unparalleled bang for buck. But it doesn't change the fact that at it's heart its just another tool to attract and "lock" customers to Vodafone. And that's all I was pointing out - because of that, they can afford to include that device in the list of handsets that are supported for use with Semble, in amongst the other, expensive ones. And that, in fact, is the topic of this discussion, so we get back around to that again...

In summary of the points I made earlier, I doubt very much that this is a viable business in its current form. It remains to be seen whether they can onboard a "critical mass" of banks to support the NFC payment service, as well as rapidly (and if they don't get more banks, then they will HAVE TO be rapid) expand to some of those other lines of business - vouchers, transport payment (Snapper, AT HOP, etc.).

If they can do neither of those then they're dead in the water.

Quit complaining about phones being locked. It's the norm elsewhere.

Also asb covers most people I know. Seems it's the older people that are with anz and westpac so no big loss for new technology launch. If you really want it go open an asb account

No, if you install Lollipop then your device is theoretically off the "supported list"...the only devices on the list that are supported (currently) whilst running lollipop are the HTC One M8 and the LG G3...

Of course, you'll probably find that they'll ADD support for the S4 once their official 5.0 releases are pushed out OTA.

Yeah I figured that... But if you do it right now, ie. before the official OTA arrives from your carrier, then you'd be unsupported. I'm not sure why you would not just use it under your current OS version though? I assume you're on the current official version?

No, I am running custom ROM, so already on lollipop, although quite a few countries have already received the official lollipop for my model so it shouldn't be very far away.
It's not a big enough deal to flash back to kitkat for a few weeks then upgrade to lollipop officially, I can live without Semble for now ;)

Makes me question why the need to block out rooted phones tho, I mean anybody with the gumption to root and flash a custom ROM is going to know about root cloak? Almost purpose defeating....
KNOX is my other concern, I hope it doesn't look at KNOX status, that will kill about 1 in 10 Samsung users.

Yeah so I don't know if they can/would bother checking KNOX from their app. It's easier to check for Root though. I can only assume it's a "security" measure as there is greater potential for nasty exploits that steal your money if you're rooted, as well as the fact that the carriers would likely refuse support of any sort to Rooted phones, so they are only being consistent...

But I'm with you - I can live without it. That was my original point - what's the value proposition for the end user that makes it actually desirable - whipping out your phone to pay for something is neither sexy, nor cool, and there is no financial incentive to use it (that I'm aware of) so...I don't think "more secure" and "more convenient" are going to win most people over. Especially when you consider the usability angle - do the exact same thing with your phone that you'd do with your card...hmmm...still not seeing the value here.

Also cant get cash out with it, cant use an atm with it.

Mainly I want it as a backup if I go to the servo and find I forgot my wallet or something. More ways to access my money is only a good thing no matter how stupid it looks to use it.

If I could pay friends with it between banks it would be useful, but only if it happened immediatly.

For vodafone yes. Not spark yet. Will go up to the mall shortly and see if they have any and swap both of them over. One is normaly in my tablet but I do swap it to the phone when the phone is out of data because I never really use the tablet when I am out except when taking it to show people things on.

Got mine via Spark today. $5 for a sim but its all good. Linked it to my ASB account. Havent actually used it yet. Would have been far better if it supposed ATHOP and the likes though. At least now I have another use for NFC other than syncing my BT Headset :p
