This is what I am getting on snap. If we ignore the fact it goes to Australia then back to NZ as it says snaps server is in Australia (Must just be a bug with the geolookup on snaps address).

Update:
Didn't telstra used to host google servers or something as I remember a while ago I found google was resolving to 203.97.30.144 - 203.97.30.155.

As we can see here from APNIC thease belong to telstra:

The 203 range IP's that you referred to are TelstraClear's "Google box" hosted in NZ which also acts as their YouTube cache.

Cool pictures guys and thanks to FM for posting the tool link, just have a play.

The geo ip information doesn't always get it right I've found in the past.

My current speculation is this (yes, it's time for the tin foil hat!)....

The traffic is heading to .us (eventually).

But it's not going up the SCX.

It's going to .au on SCX to pick up reach capacity on AJC. It's doing this because it's much cheaper for Telstra to use it's SCX capacity to .au and then it's own cables such as AJC or Endevor for this low value traffic.

Then it gets consolidated at a clearing house (ix - because they have under used capacity to those locations and it's cheap).

From there it's heading back to JAP to pick up cheap transit to .us on one of the dozen or so cables between JAP and .us.

Much of this is happening at layer 2, so we don't see the hops at all on a layer 3 trace route.

I get the impression there's some argie bargie going on and some people are trying to drive down their buy prices by pissing off us users, so they're shunting the traffic around on to cheaper links until it upsets someone enough to pull into line on the deal that's being asked for (I did warn you about the Tin Foil Hat!).

If I was putting ads on Google right now I'd be figged off that 250,000 odd consumers are having a rubbish experience with Google. I'm sure those of you who are seeing those ads aren't to bothered and are just miffed that your stupid computer isn't working as well as it was.

Last think I'm sure you're thinking about is making a purchase of something you've seen advertised.

Does advertising have a positive effect on people (to make a purchase or become informed) when they're just pissed off?

Not sure if this is related, but this morning when I go to www.google.com/finance it returns prices and data from "Oct 4 Close", which is 4 PM New York time, when the NYSE closes. It should be "Oct 5 Close".Any stock quotes are also 24 hours old. Very odd, normally google finance returns real-time quotes.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Ok, can someone explain to me how to use that tool?

I assumed you just use the Proxy Trace button as the Host Trace button seems to just trace from the US server?

Ok, well that tells us the value of that tool then...  A tracert from my machine shows 2 hops, not the number in the image above.

Customers may be experiencing intermittent issues with slow loading for some overseas websites. This is an issue with the websites concerned and their traffic routing preferences. It occurs outside both our network and we have no control over the routing. The issue is intermittent and appears to also impact customers of other New Zealand internet service providers.

Although the cause of the problem is outside our network, on behalf of our customers we’ve asked our international traffic providers to raise this with the website companies concerned. As long as this issue exists, we will continue to point out to those websites the impact on our customers and the less-than-satisfactory experience they will be having when visiting the websites.

Hi guys,

Through a contact at google nz I have managed to open a ticket with them on this issue as it's in their interest to find out whats happening.

They have asked me to send through the following details so that they can investigate, so if people can PM me their details I will forward them on just to show that it's not an isolated issue.

Cheers

Source IP of the affected users (e.g. output from www.whatismyip.com)?
- IP address of the DNS server(s) the users are using
- The physical location of the users affected (e.g. Cape Town, South Africa)
- Output of either of the following commands from an affected user:
 dig -t txt o-o.myaddr.l.google.com +short
 nslookup -querytype=txt o-o.myaddr.l.google.com

It's not fast either...  So who knows where that IP is.

Someone said yesterday that 74.125 is announced from Sydney.

Anyway, hope this information helps someone to make some improvements for everyone.  I confess I don't fully understand at all.

Routing issues like this happen and would you rather it took a wee bit longer to get to google or to not be able to get to google at all?

If I have to choose between those two options then I pick 'not at all'.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Nail on the head.  Numerous people are experiencing time-outs so I guess the result is a 'not at all'.  Very frustrating when logging into gmail takes you off to a bunch of different servers/urls, goodness knows located where and the route taken to get there, when logging in.
Further, many sites use google-ads which a page that is loading gets stuck on.

Edit: apologies, double-post.  Must have hit enter too many times before the page finished loadingWink
