Great, thanks for that. Hopefully might quieten those who seem to expect a $199 device on $40 a month plan.... and plenty of data

We appreciate that your store may be receiving many customer enquiries regarding the iPhone, however, please ensure that no information is printed or pricing lists are created in-store for our customers. We can discuss pricing with customers, but any printed material must be printed by the customer.
To provide any printed material to customers that is not Apple approved puts Vodafone in breach of our commercial agreement with Apple and therefore our distribution at risk

Haha, it appears Apple is both very aware of their image and very stringent in this department. I wonder how Vodafone appears through all this?

Hardware subsidies are defined BY EACH STORE, so each Vodafone/First Mobile/DS Wireless/etc store is likely to have a different offer.

Their web site does quote hard figures - are you sure about that? Or is it the case that Vodafone's own retail stores follow the web site, but other retailers don't have to??

Has anyone any more information on policy for hardware subsidies on other than iPhone plans?

You'll get the usual Choose subsidies though some retail stores may cut into their phone margin as well as their contract commission margin and subsidise the sale price further. You won't see these better-than-usual deals via regular channels on the Iphone for some time, at least until supply becomes more available. The best subsidy you'll receive so far is via the Iphone plans.

Forgive my ignorance, but can you not just change the APN setting in the phone to a standard one? Or is it perhaps not possible to mess with such settings on an iPhone.

I agree. They don't need to. Everybody has to sign a contract before they can walk out of the store with an iPhone. Though a prepay sim can be used on the phone, the monthly fee still has to be paid.

No, iPhone will not be available on Prepay.
You need to have subscribed to either an iPhone plan or alternatively a standard On account plan (You Choose, talkZone, or Corporate) with a compatible Broadband plan for mobiles.

It only states that the iPhone is not available on Prepay, not that the Prepay SIM card won't work on the phone.

The key part may be the "with a compatible" in their last sentence - I don't know if data is available on pre-pay sims? If it is not, their statement might actually mean that you cannot use the phone unless you have a sim that allows mobile broadband - i.e. one on a contract rather than pre-pay.

Vodafone could learn a lot from Apple's marketing machine. That isn't necessarily a dig at Vodafone either (last night's interview and pricing debacle notwithstanding) as most companies could.

There is no provision in the iPhone UI to change the APN, at least in iPhone OS 2.0 beta 8.

AFAICT, Vodafone could quite easily lock out prepay sims from being used in iPhones without any need to mod the handset itself. The phone's IMEI is sent to the base station during sign-on, so all they have to do is lock out any Apple-issued IMEI that attempts to log on to the network with a prepay SIM. Whether they will bother doing this is another matter.

EDIT: The APN is editable on v1 iPhones sold into Germany and France (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307463). And of course, if you have pwned the phone (with e.g. the soon-to-be-released pwnage tool v2.0) then you can edit the APN list on the phone firmware. The APN list is customise by carrier and is in the filesystem at /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/.

That's great news. I was told by a CSR that it would work but I was waiting to see it officially confirmed.
