Has anyone else got TrueNet hooked up to it? I have some interesting reports coming back. Lets just say they are not good.

I've got a static IP. Seems to have been solid in the week since it's been installed. I spoke to the Downer (?) guy provisioning the line (not the tech plugging stuff in). He had to do some stuff but got it sorted and its been solid since (other than being assigned to some random outfit and thinking that it's in Auckland).

I don't have a PC regularly plugged in via ethernet at the moment, and so haven't been hammering speedtest. Some variation in speeds, but are sufficiently close to max out my N-wireless notebook whenever I think to do one.

Symptom: Can ping Vodafone's gateway, but not DNS servers.

CSR answered the phone before the hold music started (bad sign - I am the only one with a major problem right now :-( ). Got me to switch everything from my router to the HG659. No difference. Reset HG659 to factory default. No difference.
CSR could log in to our router. He thought perhaps something strange was happening in our home network.
(Several references to tier 2 while all this was going on.)
After 58 minutes on the phone, someone told the poor CSR, who then told me, that they had allocated my static IP address to someone else. Explains a lot. They allocated me a new static IP.

Twenty minutes later I had everything plugged back into my Mikrotik router, rebooted some stubborn devices, etc. All back to normal. Where did the last 90 minutes go?

Sorry Vodafone. I really think you are putting heaps of effort into supporting FibreX, but between my experience - a very basic planning mistake that should never happen - combined with the far more disruptive experience of a few others on this forum, grade is now 'could do better'.

Anyone else see issues with packet loss?

This is out to Vodafone in Auckland from Wellington (I was seeing it to everywhere with no traffic on my network). It settled late in the night, but I'm seeing frequent jumps in it so far today.

I have Gigatown Gigabit internet. I was a Truenet panelist but when I got Gigabit Fibre they told me they were not measuring that.
(because there tests were not accurate?? - I *think* that is what they said that but can't recall exactly- it was 18 mths ago).

They asked for their box back & so I returned it.

Got a call earlier today from VF to follow up on my static IP query to confirm what the story is around it costing an additional $4.99 and the mixed info about it from VF. I was informed that there is actually going to be a charge for the static IP address but due to me being told that there will not be one, I will get this cost waived for the duration of my 12 month contract and then it will kick back in.

So it looks like whatever issues they were having with their Static IP address allocations was sorted yesterday and my home connection had its static IP address allocated last night. My parents connection was also changed over to the static IP address, both addresses are in the 203.118.151.x range which appears to be registered to Ihug. A little bug bear for me is that this address range puts my location on geo location in Hamilton, but I guess I can live with that.

Speed results look pretty decent tonight as well:

good news is they fixed up my static.

bad news is they remotely logged on and factory reset the hg695 wiping out my port forwards, dhcp settings etc. might take a backup after i reconfigure it.

That would appear to be another good reason not to use the HG659.

ISP's having remote management tools is nothing new.

Look at it this way, as a techy yes, it could be a pain. But for someone who is not savvy, the fact that they can ask for help with an issue and have it resolved without being stepped slowly through it is a massive productivity boost.

It would be a good reason to backup your configuration for any router/switch/modem/etc, independent of whether others can reset it or not.

High-risk practices like not having backups are so common that people think it is OK when it is not.

This comment intrigued me, and I started looking around to try and best understand it.

Of course google is chock full of comments about the performance of this hardware when connected to gigabit internet connections - ie it sucks. Best performance quotes I've read include around 500mbps in bridge mode, and about 200-300 when acting as router as well.

Great for fast ethernet connections (100mbps) and small networks, but not anything else.

Thanks. I prefer to minimise customisation/config of the Vodafone box at the expense of optimum speed.

However, I pointed the speedtest at ACSData and results are a bit different. This is from MBP, via ethernet to Airport Extreme, via ethernet to HG659.

saving me 10 minutes of retyping is not really what i'd call "high-risk", it's a couple of screens of gui entries.

and if they had to factory reset it to get it to work then possibly me restoring a backup might break it again. who knows.

but would have been nice for them to ask first.
