Last week: Cable in Christchurch almost unusable internationally for several days.

This week: Hello Christchurch would you like to sign up for 24 months cable plan.

Excuse me if I'm not exactly brimming with enthusiasm.

Minimum terms are stupid, if you are confident in your product then you should be confident that people will stay for a long time just because they want to.

Vodafone are renown for their stunning customer service...24month contract covers them for more congestion issues maybe?

I can believe that the 24 month term helps with capacity planning.

I don't like a 24 month term but the important info is the break fee if I leave early. Does anybody know what the break fees are? Are they the same as for other cable plans?

The break fee is a big factor. If it were say $50 (I highly doubt it) for a 24 month contract, that's not a problem.

The other thought I had is ring up and talk to the customer retention team. I have fibre in the process of installation in my area with a live date of Feb/March, however if I can get better speeds now with cable I'd like it. Also on the 130/10 plan so it would be $20 or so cheaper to switch to the new plan. They can either keep me giving me a shorter term contract or lose a customer. It's not like they haven't covered all their costs over the years since we started with Paradise.

The other thing is a direct confirmation from Vodafone on the modem being used to ensure it's either a pure modem or bridged and static IP.

I understand the moaning about terms but this another reason to stay with Vodafone. They keep coming up with attractive offerings to increase the likelihood that I'll be on cable for a lot longer.

I've been committed to getting fibre for quite a few years because it is the better technology. But FibreX would be OK in the medium term, maybe even two years, provided it remained price competitive and service was fine.

I took their recent Sky deal for free Sky Sports. That commits me until mid-2017 which is a few months after fibre is available to me. It seems quite likely that I will get another good offer next year to keep me with Vodafone.

I have to wait till mid 2019 for fibre so I got no probs with a 24mth contract

I just phoned Vodafone, checking that we will have a bridge mode. His description was "We install an ONT, which connects to an HG659. Yes, you can connect your own router to the ONT." We all know what the 'O' stands for! :-) That is the marketing spin, which the first level technical seem to believe (he then told me there is glass inside the coax - I politely said thanks and bye). Thank goodness for Geekzone!
(ONT = optical network terminal for those catching up with telecoms TLAs)

We are on 50/10 for $80 per month at the moment. Speed goes to 200/[more than 10] for the same price. Will try saying I don't want the HG659, and they can have their 24 month term back in exchange. We are not speed demons, and are not despite to change.

Sorry to hear. It seems forever when it is longer than a year.

We started at 2021 in the first plan then came forward to 2019 a couple of years ago. Last year we came forward to Jan 2017 and now they've started installing the fibre on our street so we are meant to be up in March.

Since it came up earlier in the thread, at the moment Vodafone's standard ETC for 1 year Contract is $199, the few 2-Year terms I saw were $299.

No idea however if this same rate will apply to "FibreX."

I think that it is more likely that the rep got confused between fibre, which Vodafone do sell, and cable FibreX, which they will soon sell.

Nope. Bridge only. It will be supplied with an HG659.

The modem is going to be configred to behave like a UFB ONT inasmuch as it'll be emitting tagged frames (in vlan 10), rather than untagged frames, as previous cable modems have done.
