Its not about speedtest results...its about real results where downloading from overseas seems slower than ever.

Its about international shaping that is now massive compared to before gigabit.

I'm not implying Vodafone are doing this, However..

There has been many cases of where ISPs have been caught out to be messing with Speedtest traffic.

As far as my testing goes, I have not noticed this as of yet, But it certainly isn't an uncommon practice.

there is network oddities out there, but nothing that i could personally quantify as definitely being fiddled with. It is hard to get exact side by side tests to prove that is the case however... getting a 'feel' for when things just aren't quite right isn't hard.

Those having real world issues, not speedtests, With their connection i'd recommend taking close looks into transfers, control end to end so you can compare packets, if there is something extra at play you will be able to spot it there.

After some quick testing, here are the speeds I get using the various software and services I often use.

Speedtest = 924Mbps/97Mbps
nPerf = 863Mbps/97Mbps
fast.com = 260Mbps

Battle.net = 88MB/s
Origin = 22MB/s
Steam = Varies 5-25MB/s
Uplay = Very erratic 10-60MB/s
Star Citizen = 102MB/s
DigitalFoundry = 16MB/s
Torrents = 91MB/s

Two simultaneous 8K YouTube streams work flawlessly.

Downloads that utilise p2p seem to go very fast vs the very slow and unpredictable speeds from the likes of Uplay, Steam and Origin.

I'm not too worried about the speeds although there is definitely something up with them, I care more about the fact that websites take 5s to load and/or timing out.

Side Note: Does anybody else have their connection drop everyday mid-to-late afternoon for a minute or so?

4.52am and Steam is downloading at 9MB/s. I used to get 12MB/s on my old 100/10 MB/s plan! What the hell Vodafone!!!!

Vodafone or an a hiding to nothing, as the old saying goes. They will be blamed for every variation in speed even when it is not their fault.

When you are downloading on Steam's busiest days of the year, I think that any slowdown is more likely to be the Steam infrastructure creaking. Most Steam users wouldn't even be able to tell that difference.

also consider where the game is coming from.

Some will only pull off valves servers as they are deamed not popular enough, You very well likely will be going to the US for that..

Steam is threaded though so that should help it but then you need to consider the rework they did on the downloader awhile back. It is now far more heavy on the harddrives, If your disk cant keep up to that Your going to have an issue.

Credit to the steam service though, since the removal of the horrible preforming Vodafone Content server (which now does land you going international for the initial payload too) It hits Akamai based content servers most of the time.

Realistically, one could question if VF have substantial Akamai servers to withstand the gbit service but im sure if a link there or the machines themselves are struggling NOC would be aware and looking at options there.

So much is under the hood nowdays, quoting downloads from steam, from origins, from whatever Never paints the full picture. Pay attention to where your data is actually coming from, you may spot a common occurrence to press on.

Thats a lot of technical mumbo-jumbo, the fact is I paid more for faster speeds and are not getting that. I have downloaded 78 games on steam on 100/10 at 12MB/s everytime, during sales, on-peak, off-peak. Always the same. It's not just steam. P2P is worse too.

It is not mumbo jumbo.

If you have a connection that runs at 1gb/s, then the other end you're connecting too needs to support delivering you content at 1gb/s. That's maths for you.

Steam is configured for a world - america - when people do NOT get gig internet speeds en masse, and are lucky to get 100mb. SO they configure for the masses, meaning basic maths applies again. If no-one is using the systems, you benefit from the low user content and will get faster delivery. If everyone is hammering, you will not. Simple maths.

Google, Amazon and Microsoft (and to some extent Apple) have got the capability to deliver higher speeds (esp. microsoft), but they don't need to rush to turning it on for the planet. When they do, you will benefit from the overall higher capacity.

I think NZ is actually very lucky to have gig speed networks available to a large part of the country, when others are struggling to do so (have a look at the USA's fibre network coverage footprint... yeah....)

Again, 2 days ago I had perfect Internet when I was on 100/10. Now at 1000/100 I am way worse off. The mumbo-jumbo applies. Vodafone are using tricks and it's not working.

I was previously getting pretty consistent speeds on the gig plan but the last couple of days it has been really struggling, getting just under 130 Mbps on tests near full up though.

hmm so reading all these replies/comments im worried now after just requesting/signing up for FibreX.

Im currently on cable 50/2 and pretty happy with performance. Speedtest.net tests show I get fairly close the 50mb/s and real life performance is also good.

Ive signed up for the 200mb plan and the installer is coming in on Thursday to install. Should I let it still happen, or cancel and stay on my current 50mb connection??

how is it that the FibreX can be worse than the existing 50mb connections?

Yes keep the upgrade, The speedtest.net results are not a good indicator

As Linux has said - keep going with the upgrade.
It's the same price and you get far more bandwidth.

I made the same change, and I can say I get very similar performance from the FibreX connection compared to the 50Mbps.
A lot of things (P2P, Steaming, Game downloads) go well over 100Mbps consistently if not maxing the connection.

The faster upload is also great.

Saying that, there are issues:
I can't do HTTP/HTTPS downloads of large files at faster than 2.5MB/s.
Almost all websites are slower to initially start loading but then load faster.

The issues smell like a crappy proxy of some kind, I don't consider them as a deal breaker as they are something which can be addressed/resolved.

Had my first real world noticeable improvement yesterday. Uploaded a video to YouTube and it was just about done by the time I wrote a short comment on it. That's quite a relief after the one I uploaded the day of the install didn't seem to be any quicker.
