garbonzai: Hmmm, did some shopping today, went to PAKnSAVE, Harvey Norman and Caltex and guess what,

Not one of them charged a "Credit card convenience fee"

Had a bit of a read in Vodafone's "Ways to pay your Vodafone bill", they definitely push Direct Debit,

Also noticed "Late payment fee and missed payments", (which I hope never to do) is $10 for Vodafone customers, but $15 for X TelstraClear customers (if you have a "REF:TCL") in top right of your bill. (yep I'm on cable)

Out of interest, how overdue is late payment, a few days, a week, a fortnight, month, what??, before the late payment are added??

Been to a hotel recently??  Over the past couple of years they have been charging a CC surcharge  for everything..

Nope, have never had a hotel put a CC surcharge on, have had a motel not to happy with taking AMX though.

AMX I can defiantly understand not sure on the exact figure they charge but it used to be around %4

Maybe they give some leeway for cheque clearance times/holiday periods? I wouldn't depend on it though. They give you two weeks or something to pay your bill before the due anyway. After then safest just assume that you "may" get late fees and account restrictions etc. Pretty much the same as any big company. Ts and Cs...

I'm wondering how they arrived at the 2% figure. Vodafone uses DPS PaymentExpress. Assuming the most expensive CC processing rate ($0.50/transaction), and the cheapest monthly VF bill ($29/month) that works out at 1.7%. So basically in the worst case, the figure is already being rounded up, in reality, the higher volume payment prices are about a 5th of that per transaction and the average invoice, I'd imagine, is a bit higher than $29. So basically from what I can see they are well overcharging if it's just transaction costs.

Secondly, seems like a double standard not charging for automatic credit card payments and prepay credit card topups, just shows that costs actually can be absorbed.

On the other hand though, if companies don't pass on transaction processing costs, then the winners are the credit card companies and associated middlemen because they can just extort everyone and the customer won't even know.

I thought most businesses made on line things cheaper? And direct debit too?

Eg electricity companies give prompt payment discounts?

Re hotels, Accor (Novotel, Ibis, Mercure, Sofitel, Pullman) charge for settling with CC but not for debit cards like Visa Debit.

There has been a mention here by Vodafone staff about the companies who charge this fee as a way to justify it. I am sure there are lots of examples of companies who don't charge so not a good idea to quote companies who do. Also charging a fee for Visa debit card should be reconsidered. Yes there is the option to pay it through DD which is the preferred option for all companies. I do have a question about the one off fee. People who are going to top up their prepaid mobiles online every month as a one off are they going to be charged a one off fee too?

No prepay customers don't occur the 2% fee as they only have 1 other method of actually topping up, Going to a store to buy a recharge voucher.

Why not? Prepay are the bad credit, budget customers surely? Why treat them better than the high value customers?

Vodafone doesn't care about the credit history of prepaid customers.....because they are prepaid.

No prepaid customer has ever incurred a charge with vodafone that has not been paid for and had to be written off.

That may be but pre pay was invented to increase mobile companies' revenue base by including those whose poor credit prevented them from qualifying for on account.

Why else do you think prepay was invented?
