Has anyone logged a job about the restarting of the modem? Its not caused by the Vodafone provided router like we thought I have swapped to a Nighthawk after reading the reviews you guys posted but I'm still having the issues when i upload to Youtube or Stream on twitch.

I have moved the modem to the first entry point to the house for the cable and removed all splitters but still having the issue. Anyone found a solution or have a job logged to have it looked into? It only happens when i max the upload for an extended period of time never for download.

Thoughts?

Are they using DHCP for Cable now? i do recall seeing that exact same issue when using DHCP over DSL (an unsupported medium however...)

Hey all. Thought I would add my experience about the new 1gbit service as I've had cable for about 15 years and not a basic user.

There is no batting around the bush - this service has been the worse I've ever had from cable. It shines true that one can not trust speedtest.net for real world tests.

To me, advertising 1gbit is putting clients on the edge of disappointment. The international traffic is so far off this I personally am not finding any huge improvements. My main test is my personal true 1gbit port, dual Xeon server in LA - 3 hoops from when it gets to USA. (Yes there is new transport paths on these new plans and very grateful for this upgrade Vodafone, most important part now for ISP to work in now) I have noticed max of 30% to 50% faster over older 130 plan. Great for the 200mbit plan - not so 1gbit.

Cutting to the point this service has improved greatly for reliability. The first few weeks of release should be gone and forgotten as you could clearly see the cable team working away in the back ground clearing up the issues.

The router requirements - if you don't want to spend lots on your LAN get the 200mbit plan. Either way, that default Vodafone router should not be used. To see Vodafone remote in to update firmware is enough reason for me. (Read someone lost port forwards too!?)

I work with Ubiquiti and Mikrotik routers every day - to me the pfSense experience at home is much better for most users (apart from working out best hardware but easy to overcome this). The Ubiquiti needs too many updates for a router (and we all know Ubiquiti is yo-yo with updates - as I downgrade my Unifi AC-Pro back to UAP-Pro to get zero handover back, over waiting). And Mikrotik I've had for years at home but just a bit OTT for most users.

I jumped on AliExpress and brought a custom little 64bit PC ($130 USD) and loaded pfSense to it. 32gb mPCI hard drive + 8gb low voltage ram. Celeron CPU 3215U. Does 1gbit WAN with complete ease - max 25% CPU (and I have lots of firewall rules already) also note - just get Dual NIC ports as bridging ports not so good for pfsense, use your switch.

But the key part and what I hope to add to the last few pages of this topic - this router has uptime of 41 days right now (1.5tb WAN used) and it's last reboot was because I re arranged my cabinet to settle it in.

So, to no surprise, don't ever use the free router from an ISP and only get the 1gbit plan if you have many users on the LAN.

@Kezzainc the Vodafone HG659 is limited to 25? users on its DHCP table making it really poor for larger households (@chiefie knows - He switched to a Mikrotik and I've heard no more complaints) - I have no idea why they included this limitation. You can get around it by flashing the BigPipe firmware on it and reconfiguring it. With one of my servers in the states (Gigabit connection hosted at Softlayer) I get around 300-400Mbit out of it (HTTPS) or around 40Mbit out of it via SSH. My server in Amsterdam (Leaseweb, dedicated) gets around 200Mbit but really these are decent figures based on TCP overheads and all that stuff and this is on a Gigabit BigPipe connection.

These are several limiting factors with doing tests over to servers in the US such as bandwidth availability on the end server, the distance and other factors that'll severly affect your test - I can tell you now, you're never going to get Gigabit to overseas. The connection Vodafone sells you is technically a Gigabit L2 connection but there are always limitations in the way that prevent you from achieving that not controlled by Vodafone.

For example, my Steam downloads appear to be capped at 50MB/s and this is on a beefy Xeon based workstation w/ SSD storage connected to my Gigabit network. Origin gets around 90MB/s but if I was going to run the same test on 2 computers at the same time (lets say 2 computers downloading the same Steam game) I'd get 100MB/s combined (or around 800Mbit).

This is the most common complaint I'm seeing on Geekzone - people not understanding there are so many limiting factors to this. My Gigabit connection maxes out at around 950Mbit down, 450Mbit up and I am yet to see this with any international site and to be honest I won't expect to.

So - am I disappointed? Not at all. The whole point of getting a Gigabit connection is to speedtest to a NZ host then destroy our Reddit karma with showing those pesky Australians - we all know that :) but the HG659 is a very good router for smaller households that can do full Gigabit with ease.

Do a Speedtest to https://webnx.speedtest.net and see what you get.

I have the (dynamically assigned) static IP option, and have to restart the modem every week or so when the internet stops. Using an Edgerouter Lite, so it's not the router. Only on the 200 plan rather than gigabit, and it occurs at odd times seemingly unlinked to usage so it doesn't appear to be throughput related.

+1. A "static" IP on FibreX is just a reserved DHCP allocation. I have had to restart the modem twice in the last month (so about once a fortnight-ish) when the "Online" light winks out.

Changed my DNS from the default to unblock-us dns on my router and I was able to upload a 19gb YouTube video and stream on twitch for 4hours with no issues, maybe it was luck but that's the first time since i got FibreX installed.

Can someone else test my theory?

UPDATE - RIP seems to be fine during the day uploading and streaming but has crashed tonight twice while streaming on twitch :( other ideas?

I have pfsense all working well too. Wont go back, easy to upgrade the hardware later if need more and keep same config.

Hey - very sorry late reply, loving the holidays without a computer around tbh!

I have this unit - Qotom-Q310G4 with Celeron Processor 3215U. I gained my confidence for this notimg Amazon selling it. Really did have zero issues setting it up - I got the wifi card added by seller but not put the effort to make it work with pfSense. Also have an old school PCI SSD running not m2 which is a bonus.

Sad part, our internet went real bad this afternoon. Im not at home to find what was at fault but router + bridge restart sorted it... dam reset my uptime.

Anyone getting this disappointing speed?

I'm in Christchurch, Sockburn/Upper Riccarton area.

My results on the Max plan are in the 900/100 range but I am in wellington and running a pfsense box.

I have a static address, and, for the sake of (pseudo)science, contributing to The Community (ie - this discussion), and because I was not home, so there was no way it would affect my Internet response, uploaded just over 7 gigs of random small files from home to another Wellington server (I don't have space on overseas servers - though could try doing it to Google Drive). It appears to have completed without incident.

My Mikrotik Hex (RB750Gr3) tells me it has been running for 8 weeks, 4 days, 7 hours, 35 minutes, 13 seconds. No router or modem reboot in that time. Though, when I logged in to its CLI (I'm still not at home) it did express concern that it's WAN IP address had changed during that time. (That was when Vodafone allocated my first static IP to someone else as well.) Combination of FibreX Modem, and Mikrotik router has been very stable for us.

Billing, on the other hand ...
I was one of a few people who was promised a static IP at no extra charge - twice in my case. Still they are charging $5 per month. They have offered to waive this for six months, or a year, or something, but insisted static IP on FibreX is charged.
Does anyone have a static IP at no charge?
