@MikeHales or @morat or someone else, can anyone please validate if I can use my current firewall and just do the vlan tagging on it and not use the HG659? I know its somewhat been eluded that the vlan tarecgging will happen but I need to validate this before I make the jump to it.

Swapping out the HG659 isn't a supported configuration, but we're (opps, did I just out myself) not doing anything to actively police or require its presence.

So providing you're up to configuring .1q on your router's upstream interface, and getting it to DHCP its WAN-facing IP address, we'll neither know nor care if you swap out the HG659 (but if you screw up and break your connection, our response is likely to be 'plug in the router we gave you, k?').

The only caveat would be that it's entirely possible that products will be rolled out to the network that assume the presence of the HG659 (one of the major design drivers in the current rollout has been reducing the differences between the HFC and UFB networks from a platforms and processes point of view, so we can offer a more uniform product suite (as well as reduce the information load on our front line staff) so I wouldn't be surprised to see us making the most of that (note: I'm not a products guy, so I'm just specularing there)). If that were the case, you obviously wouldn't be able to make use of said products without the expected RGW on your connection.

Well that was an interesting chat with the Vodafone Sales and then the Technical team. I can definitely get FibreX but I had a few questions around how it will be set up and what modem will be provided.

This is what I got told:

- a black box (assuming the technicolor 4400) will be installed on the wall which will then have a cable going to the HG569 router

- I can still get a static IP if I choose to

- If VF are unable to get me connected within 3 days, the $100 credit will be applied to the second bill from when I am connected

- The first training session for the techies on FibreX starts at 3.30pm today and they got sent an email this morning so they have close to no information around the technical side apart from "its now available" so he asked me to call back either later on today or tomorrow.

The question I had was more or less trying to validate if the new modem used for this will have bridge mode capability but the answer I got was you will have to use the HG659.

Also, is it me or the new "fastest" option is at the same price as the old 130/10 plan?

Yeah, I'd rather stick with my current router, so will also be interested to know how this will be set up.  Given the wide range of routers available currently, it seems crazy to force people to use a provided one that may or may not have the functionality that we currently have from our own routers.

Agreed! Or in my case, running a full blown enterprise firewall just because I can. I will probably hold off for a week or so before signing up to it to let the initial rush die down and see if there are any issues that do pop up.

vodafone have always done dodgy stuff with P2P traffic, nothing new. good to see its clearly stated though.

That's always been the case for Vodafone for UFB and Cable. Nothing new.

As always: don't abuse it and you'll be fine.

I have just upgraded (call centre) from HFC 100/10 to 200/20Mbps, and was offered a 12 month term - without asking for it.

Took 30 minutes.

Happy camper.  smile

Nice!

@sideface is this using the existing Cisco and an immediate plan change, or will I need to schedule a tech callout and modem upgrade?

As much as I want gigabit, I have absolutely zero need for it (other than me, we're a fairly low bandwidth household).

Signed up for the gigabit FibreX - according to sales it had 500mbps upload...  unlimited (apparently) for $79/month over 12 months ... happy with that however they are charging me $5/per month extra for the static IP... anyone else being pinged for the static IP?

Both "FibreX" offerings use DOCSIS 3.1, and the Cisco DPC3008 is a DOCSIS 3.0 modem - so a new Technicolour 4400 cable modem and a tech callout is required ("guaranteed" to be within 3 working days).

Like you, I think that gigabit cable is overkill for domestic use - so I went for 200/20Mbps - which is cheaper than 100/10Mbps!

Thats interesting as they did not mention anything about an additional cost about the static IP when I called them to query this. I am out of town next week I will call them back next week to book this in and hopefully by then the sales team know a bit more about the service.

Just ordered the 200mb service, the guy on the phone sounded a little unsure of himself but said the 3-day promise only applies to new clients and we are going to be on a 24 month contract.

we have a 3 year wait for Fibre still so I'm ok with that contract length, unless the massive congestion comes back

I was told the same but have queried this.

From the website:

Customers at eligible addresses (those in a FibreX area with an intact (pre-cabled) home), will be able to enjoy all the benefits of superfast FibreX with minimal waiting, with our 3 day install or $100 credit offer.

I'll query this also. We were also on the promo of having Sky Sport free for a year on cable, sounds like we are losing that special

I called back to confirm pricing and get my parents connection moved over to the 200/20 plan from the 50/2 plan. Turns out it works out to be cheaper to upgrade with a $15 saving per month on a 12 month contract which also entitled me to 12 months of free sky sports meaning another $29.90 saving on top for them and with a total of $45 a month saving. Really a no brainer plus if they fail to turn up ion 3 days, another $100 credit.

Taking my 130/10 plan up to the gigabit connection also saves me $15 a month on a 12 month contract with the added discounts I will be getting.

I also asked about static IP addresses and they said since we already have it on our current plans, it will just carry over without the additional cost? But I will wait for the new bill and confirm then.

@vortexnz

Just signed up too for a 12 month term. And superb customer service from the call center so made it all pretty painless.

But I also had to pay an extra $4.99 per month for the static IP. Bit of a niggle but overall I'm still saving money over the previous plan (with an out-of-sight faster connection) so pretty happy overall. $60 per year isn't that much different to the USD 40 I'd have to pay for DynDNS (though double no-ip's offer). The rep I spoke to wasn't able to confirm whether or not it would be the same static IP as I have currently so will need to wait for the install to sort that out.

I got an auto-generated email from VF while I was still on the phone. Apparently there's a glitch in the system since the email has the wrong price in it. I was assured this was a known error and that the price would be as discussed on the phone, so something else to watch out for.
