Not only has all the traffic from the world's biggest streaming site for gamers (twitch.tv) been routed through China for the past 2-3 months so that Vodafone's customers get oodles of pauses in video streams with even 1.3Mbps bitrates, tonight half the populated Oceania Battlefield 4 servers are unplayable because traffic is being routed through China, again...

Thanks so much Vodafone...   When will your bloody UFB service be functional again?

welcome to the wonderful world off internet [bgp] routing where traffic can go in all sorts of directions deliberately, accidentally and maliciously

basically there are no guarantees your traffic will take the shortest or lowest latency path

and this means in some circumstances a satellite link [low orbit] can have less latency than a sea floor fibre link !
