I'm setting up a new connection via ADSL, and wondering what the best or most economical setup is.  I'll want voip, fax over IP, and wireless.   Should I get something like a Netcomm NB14, turn off NAT and the firewall, and forward everything to a Linksys VOIP/wireless router, or try and get something that does everything?

Do you want Wireless 802.11n or Gig Ethernet?

How many Ethernet Ports might you require?

Do you need two Phone lines?

I've already got a 24 port gigabit switch that I'll be connecting up.

I'll just need the one VOIP port for fax and EFTPOS.

I have a number of second hand Cisco IP phones that I have yet to figure out how to configure ie. each provisioned separately, or perhaps connected to one of those asterisk derivatives.

Don't need wireless N as it's a confined space, and my wireless devices are all G.

Would it be an option to forego the ATA element altogether by using Fax-to-email and an IP Eftpos terminal?

I know that WXC offers a fax to email service which I already use for incoming faxes, but I'm not aware of any outbound services.

My eftpos terminal does have an ethernet port on it but from memory, ethernet eftpos costs a lot more?  And since I'll need the ATA for outgoing faxes anyway ....

I'm not sure about the costs involved in an IP Eftpos terminal... but it's a moot point I suppose if you need to do outbound Fax (There is no way around that).

I can't really recommend a device myself. Hopefully someone with more experience in that area can suggest something.

Thinking I need an ADSL modem with full cone NAT.  This connects to a switch.  Connected to the switch will be be the Asterix box.  I can connect the IP phones to asterix using the switch.   I have a SPA2102 which I can use as a sip client, and connect the fax machine to the SPA2102, and the eftpos terminal as well.  Would this work?

I have never found Fax over IP to be very reliable.  Depending on the make of fax machine at the other end, it either works or it doesn't.  And that's just for National faxes.  International Fax you may as well forget about in my experience.

I have stopped using fax altogether and now scan and then email the documents.  More and more organisations accept this now.  Is there some reason you can't use it for outgoing faxes?

Incoming faxes are no problem using Fax to email as you mentioned, but outgoing faxes are still a problem unless you have an analogue line.

I find that about 90% of the numbers I regularly fax to work.  I only do local and national faxes.  And my software is integrated with a HylaFAX server, and tracks sending and receipts.

I've now got a 2talk fax account as well which I will use for email to fax to solve those ones I can't fax to.  That also gives me receipt tracking with their confirmation emails.

And also I deal with the MOH, and they seem to only accept faxes.

Fax works ok over VOIP, just make sure you use a wideband codec like g711 or better yet t.38. You should get IP EFTPOS terminal, should be faster and no more expensive. There is software called HylaFax which can send digital documents as fax as far as I know. Maybe check out Elastix?

The SPA2102 supports T38 and I presume that asterix can pass this thru.   I am already using HylaFAX which is fax server software.   Don't think it can send digital documents.

As an option for fax I'd go swap from Hylafax to Fax Voip which will do T.38 and give you inbound and outbound faxing from your desktop. For EFTPOS you could then use IP - most EFTPOS providers don't charge a premium, and IMHO leasing a terminal these days is far better than buying one as you can always have the latest, and any terminals that aren't NFC capable need to be replaced by 2014 anyway.

If you did want to stick with dialup EFTPOS a Cisco ATA will solve that issue.
