Hi Guys,

I have just set up a computer with a 3G internet connection to the world. (I am Rural .. no wired internet)

I am trying to get a reliable VOIP phone service over this interface. I am finding that when I dial out, I get dial tone, dial the number, then after a few seconds I get a disconnect. Sometimes the other end will answer, then disconnect.

I am using a Linksys SPA2102 phone adapter.

Calls-in are fine .. just calls-out are the problem.

I have made sure all the SIP ports are open on the firewall for the VOIP service. According Xnet my Voip provider they are seeing that my phone interface is not responding on the ports .. is it possible that Telecom is blocking the SIP ports?

However, I can use Gtalk phone out from a computer just fine ... and that is using SIP too right? Maybe Gtalk is using different ports?

I have seen on this forum a two year old post that states that someone else had the same issue as me, but did not
resolve it. Another poster said that the Cisco SRP521 had no issues over 3G.

But before I buy the Cisco, is there any settings I can try tweaking on the SPA2102?

What APN are you using? I think there is an APN (data rather than default) that gives you direct access to all ports

I am using direct.telecom.co.nz, so should not be using there firewall ..

Quite possibly the post was mine as I am running a Cisco SRP521W over 3G. Whether you will get VFX to work successfully depends very much on which 3G network you are using:

- When using my primary Vodafone 3G (Huawei) router, VFX works fine (as good as the best urban landline)

- When I plug in my Telecom XT data stick, the internet works fine, but VFX is unreliable (fails more often than it works)

Symptoms on XT are pretty much exactly as you describe. Maverick recently posted the reasons why and it doesn't seem as though there is anything which can be done about it.

Do you have even one bar of Vodafone coverage at your property? If so, I suggest switching to Vodafone's RBI service. Coffeebaron can provide you with the kit for a DIY install -- it's what I am using and works really well.

No, not even one bar on Vodafone .. have a forest in the way. Even with Telecom I have my T-stick outside in a water-proof container tied to a 5-element yagi to get enough signal strength. I get 6mb down 2Mb up with telecom.

That's a pity. Vodafone RBI gives me on average 5Mbps down and 2Mbps up with a 7-element Yagi (8 including dipole). I have seen up to 6.1Mbps on a couple of occasions, and max. 2.9Mbps up, but 5/2 are typical. My router is inside with a 10m coax connecting it to the Yagi.

Sounds like you might have to stick with a landline, or else use your mobile for voice calls.

To eliminate losses I chose to tie the T-stick to the Dipole and have USB cable down to the house. (I have one of those USB active extender cables) works a treat.

Sounds like you might have to stick with a landline, or else use your mobile for voice calls.

Trying to do away with that cost. Telecom at $80 for 4G is outrageous enough ..

Can't argue with that. Not having to pay for a landline was a big drawcard for me too.

I've used VOIP on my android phone over XT and after playing with codecs a bit (and disabling it auto negotiating a high def codec with the SIP server) i found it was quite functional over XT.

Yeah, I think it's more of an issue with VFX than with VoIP in general. I found that Skype worked fine over XT so maybe some other VoIP service would do the job for the OP?

Or if VFX is the VoIP service of choice (as it is for me), how about forwarding all incoming calls to a Skype number at minimal cost, and then using a Skype phone or Android phone attached to the LAN via WiFi to receive incoming calls? (thereby unleashing Skype from the usual PC-based requirement).

One option could be to maintain a VPN connection with an auto keepalive and tunnel your VOIP through that? I know it sounds complicated but some devices like Yealink support this out of the box (apparently). Probably cost around $30 a month extra for a NZ based VPS to do this.

Zeon: Probably cost around $30 a month extra for a NZ based VPS to do this.

Astrill has a NZ server, and it costs me around NZ$8 per month on a 6-month term. Could be a thought for the OP if it would solve the problem.

So tell me more .. you disabled "auto negotiating a high def codec" is that a setting on my SPA2102?
